Four-point-seven miles at Pleasant Mountain
By Amber Friend | Sports Editor
Denmark, Maine, is home to the Fire Warden Trailhead on Pleasant Mountain, a total of 4.7 miles. Southern Maine’s Outdoor Adventure Board hosted a group of students on this moderately difficult hike and faced 1500 feet of elevation. The trailhead was 39 miles from the Gorham Campus, with an under an hour’s drive through small rural Maine towns. The group of about ten students warmed up quickly despite the chilly weather, staggering up one of the trails on the tallest mountain in Southern Maine until finally reaching the top after 2.3 miles. The view was
breathtaking, seeing mountains throughout the surrounding area. The school-sponsored group supplied snacks and supported the attendees throughout the challenge with words of encouragement and short breaks. The way down was especially challenging due to the now fallen leaves, making one maneuver down the rocks carefully, which took balance and patience. To spend an early morning on a Saturday outside and being active felt amazing and made one feel ready to tackle the day. OAB is continuously creating a safe and fun environment for students to experience the outdoors. Student-run, the group gives group members the opportunity to share the joys of nature and adventure with their classmates. Previous winter events they hosted included snowshoeing, skiing, ice skating, etc. In personal experience, these activities have been attended by a wide range of experienced individuals, all friendly and happy to be there and to cheer others on. People interested in attending events like these can follow OAB on Instagram or check out Campus Groups to check out previous adventures and see what events they have coming up. A majority of these programs are completely free for students to attend and are a wonderful way to meet fellow Huskies.
