Why is ice hockey the “forgotten sport?”
New England has a rich tradition of sending a multitude of players to the National Hockey League. The University of Maine Black Bears hockey program had eight players, including Scott Pellerin and Paul Kariya, move from Orono to the pros. Yet, from attendance figures at the Costello Sports Complex, it is apparent that fans have little interest in ice hockey.

Notes from the Sports Desk
There are several things that have come across my desk this week that may be crucial for the improvement of your winter. The University Community Recreation & Fitness Program offers a few forms of athletic entertainment at discounted rates that I could not let go unheard. Many of these offers have hidden appeals that are not announced to you through simple advertisement.
Rookie Jones makes first start
The Lady Huskies improved their record to 4-1 on the season and still have three important games before the break. They appear to be in traditional form for a USM women’s basketball team, having had their only loss come in double-overtime against No. 2 nationally-ranked Bowdoin. The game against UNE ,however, was not one of USM’s best performances of the season.

The real McCoy
Having a high caliber wrestling coach like USM’s Ted Reese around has many benefits. The man has made a gigantic impact on wrestling in the state of Maine, starting programs at three high schools and bringing his passion for wrestling to the state. Last week Reese brought U.S. national team captain Kerry McCoy to Gorham.
Field hockey team ties USM record for wins
Despite season-ending loss in ECAC semis, Lady Huskies tied all-time school record for wins in season

Field hockey downed in championship
On Saturday, Nov. 9 the USM field hockey team fell in the Little East Conference Championship, allowing Plymouth State to gain their third consecutive title.
Notes from the sports desk
The basketball court is a lonely place on Friday mornings at 11:30 – vacant and dark. At noon though, a group of ‘mature men’ cheerfully take the court with the skills of old-school ball players, style that would make Bob Cousy happy and even Red Auerbach, at that.
New team, old tradition
Preseason has started for the USM women’s basketball team. This means squeaking sneakers, thousands of practice shots, conditioning and the molding of a team. For the USM women’s basketball player, preseason also means preparing to extend a tradition of excellence.

Preseason on the ice
The zamboni man circled the arena in Gorham last week, preparing the ice for women’s hockey practice. The team takes the ice daily to tune up for the upcoming season begining Nov. 8 versus Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. From now until the season opener, the objective is to solidify the team and bring newcomers up to speed with the level of play in college.
Field hockey sprints into playoffs
USM’s field hockey team is number three in the LEC heading into the tournament this week. Plymouth State and Keene State are the top two in the Little East Conference. Defending LEC champion, Plymouth State, is undefeated in LEC play, Keene State has two losses and USM has three, including falling by one point to each of the top two.

Women’s tennis defeats all odds
The lady Huskies were an underdog going into the Little East Conference tennis tournament on Saturday, Oct 12. Their regular season record was a mediocre five wins, six losses and Plymouth State and Rhode Island both appeared to be strong favorites.
Soccer team plays with deflated ball
The men’s soccer team played Plymouth State last Wednesday. The highlights of the game were violent outbursts that, if nothing else, indicated the USM team was breathing. A few punches were thrown and many penalties called. In the end though, even the brutality aspect seemed to have been taken over by Plymouth, leaving us losers on all fronts.
Breaking sports news: Women’s tennis takes Little East Conference
The women’s tennis team after beginning the season with a 1-5 overall record has won the Little East Conference Women’s Tennis Championship. The team had three wins and no losses during the week previous to the Little East tournament and rode their momentum into the weekend.
