Women’s soccer has chance at playoffs despite rough start
Last Wednesday the USM women’s soccer team was punished by a superior Bowdoin team. The women of Bowdoin wore all-black uniforms and towered over the USM team. They easily overpowered our Huskies and took control of the ball and the game as if they rightfully owned the field.
Volleyball “kills” UMass Boston
USM volleyball had a successful week, defeating UMass Boston in straight sets, last Wednesday in Gorham. In the victory Freshman Amanda Starkey had a team high 13 kills. Sophomore Mandy Dessert helped with her team leading 24 assists. It was their 7th victory of the season leading them into the weekend tournament in Farmington.
Lady Huskies compete for top spot
Plymouth managed to sneak out with a victory, holding off a well-organized and relentless stampede of USM threats. The final score was Plymouth one, USM zero. A first-half goal was the only score of the day.
Ceremony held for Husky Hall of Famers
A large room enclosed by tall windows and filled with tables precisely set with sparkling silverware and dishes, provided a rather charming atmosphere for the Husky Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

NCAA Woman of the Year: Tina West
USM student Tina West was named the 2002 NCAA Woman of the Year for the state of Maine. This award honors outstanding female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics and community leadership. It is one of the top honors that the NCAA bestows upon college athletes.
Student-athletes get Wise Awards
Division III athletes are not pampered. They don’t account for much of their university’s revenue, as superstars and franchise types of players do. These athletes are real and dedicated students, not the characters who float around with a ball in their hands and a book somewhere – maybe in the locker, or perhaps at home.

Two Teams.one loser.A Fresh Season for our Field Hockey Team
The field hockey game was a miserable experience. The hurricane that landed here last week-suddenly, after a violent heat wave, coincided with the game, and nobody told me this was going to happen. That was okay though. We won.
Health Beat
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is a modest, increased risk of bacterial meningitis on college campuses. It strikes one in 100,000 people in the general population versus 3.2 cases per 100,000 people living in residence halls.
Freshmen bulk up soccer teams for ’02 season
The men’s and women’s Husky soccer teams returned to the 2002 fall season with a large number of freshmen leading the way. The eight men and ten ladies entering their first year should expect more responsibility on their team.
Women’s head coach Steve Quinones said the freshmen have adapted well and seem to show great potential for the upcoming season.
