The University of Southern Maine Women’s basketball team is off to another fast start holding a winning record of 5-1(prior to press time), and is currently ranked seventh in the nation. On December 6th, the Huskies defeated Eastern Connecticut, then ranked number one in the nation, 73-59 on the road in Willimantic, Conn.

I am not surprised by the recent revelation that Halliburton is overcharging the U.S government for oil its importing from Kuwait to Iraq. That is what happens when a contract is handed out without a bidding process to a subsidiary of a company once run by our vice-president.

This year’s flu season looks to be a doozy. It is off to an early start. Despite the current national shortage of flu vaccine, there is still a way to get vaccinated. Wyeth Vaccines has recently developed FluMist, the first nasal-mist flu vaccine in the U.

Coach Venditti has turned the University of Southern Maine women’s ice hockey team into a very competitive Eastern College Athletic Conference division III program. This year will not be any different than the past three years with Venditti at the helm.

The University of Southern Maine Men’s Ice Hockey team captured another win last Tuesday (prior to press time) in Waterville Valley, N.H. against Plymouth State 4-2. The non-conference game played in the Waterville Valley Ice Arena was decided between the pipes as junior goaltender Matt Collaton (Oakville, Ont.

I am thankful for Thanksgiving. The annual turkey day feast, which mandates a nap, copious amounts of pie consumption and NFL football on a weekday, occupies rarefied ground among American holidays. Its biggest weakness may be that it ushers in the holiday shopping season.

What USM Men’s Basketball player was recently named LEC rookie of the week?

Answer: Jesse McKinnell, Manomet, Mass, earned the honor for his play during the week of Nov. 24-30. McKinnell averaged 8.3 points and 7.7 rebounds helping the Huskies take two of three games.

The USM men’s and women’s cross county teams hosted the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships, Sat. Nov. 15 in Cumberland. It was not an ideal day to wear shorts and tank-tops but the blustery conditions did little to deter the close to five hundred runners from more than 70 schools across New England that traveled to Twins Brooks Recreation Center to compete for the New England Division III crown.

The University of Southern Maine field hockey team recently won the Little East Conference (LEC) tournament with a 3-1 win over top-seeded Keene State. With the win, the Huskies earned automatic qualification into the 2003 NCAA Division III Championship.

The University of Southern Maine women’s volleyball team ended its season on Nov. 8, with a 3-0 loss to Plymouth State in the Little East Conference (LEC) tournament semi-finals. USM, playing without team leaders Cat Lewis and Mandy Desert, struggled to fend off Plymouth State’s strong attack and was knocked from the LEC tournament in straight sets.

I was wrong. Not about Rush Limbaugh and not about too much else; but, the Packers did not win, and I said they would. I was correct that Donovan McNabb is one of the league’s best players. He proved this leading his team to a dramatic fourth quarter comeback last Monday night.

During the Great American Smokeout, always held on the third Thursday of November, millions of people quit smoking for a day or more. This national event challenges people to quit using tobacco and raises awareness about the numerous ways to quit forever.

What are “point spreads,” and how are they used?

Point spreads are used solely for gambling purposes. They are determined in Las Vegas by gambling experts, who are said to “handicap” the games. In any given NFL football game, point spreads are used to allow prospective bettors to pick either the favorite or the underdog, as determined by Las Vegas.

Rush Limbaugh is wrong about a lot of things. He is wrong about the war in Iraq, wrong about tax cuts, wrong about budget deficits, and wrong about Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. Of all the ignorant, boozed-up, sedative-induced, ill-guided and abrasive things that Rush Limbaugh has ever said “Donovan McNabb is overrated” is truly one of the most asinine.

The best thing you can do to keep from getting sick is to wash your hands. Frequently washing your hands removes germs you have picked up from other people, contaminated surfaces, or from animals and animal waste. When you pick up germs from these sources, you can infect yourself by touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
