The University of Southern Maine Women’s basketball team is approaching the final month of play in February and has only six games left in the regular season. With its fourteenth straight win and an impressive Little East record of 8-0, the team is ranked second in the nation.

Why Worry about Gonorrhea?
According to the Maine Bureau of Health, as of Nov. 28, 2003, there has been a 68 percent increase in reported gonorrhea cases in this state over the past year. There has also been an increase in gonorrhea cases at University Health Services.

Why the Patriots will win the Super Bowl
I went to my first game in Foxboro on opening day in 1985. My beloved Patriots played the Green Bay Packers, and I was lucky enough to get down on the field with my father and meet some of the players. I remember being completely awe struck by the likes of Irving Fryar and Mosi Tatupu.

A Pap test or smear, is a screening that examines the cells of the cervix to detect abnormalities that could potentially lead to cancer. The test was named after Dr. Papanicolaou, who developed the test in 1940. Having a yearly Pap test has been shown to reduce the rates of cervical cancer by about 70 percent.

Women’s Basketball off to a great start.
The University of Southern Maine Women’s basketball team is off to another fast start holding a winning record of 5-1(prior to press time), and is currently ranked seventh in the nation. On December 6th, the Huskies defeated Eastern Connecticut, then ranked number one in the nation, 73-59 on the road in Willimantic, Conn.

I am not surprised by the recent revelation that Halliburton is overcharging the U.S government for oil its importing from Kuwait to Iraq. That is what happens when a contract is handed out without a bidding process to a subsidiary of a company once run by our vice-president.

This year’s flu season looks to be a doozy. It is off to an early start. Despite the current national shortage of flu vaccine, there is still a way to get vaccinated. Wyeth Vaccines has recently developed FluMist, the first nasal-mist flu vaccine in the U.

What USM Men’s Basketball player was recently named LEC rookie of the week?
Answer: Jesse McKinnell, Manomet, Mass, earned the honor for his play during the week of Nov. 24-30. McKinnell averaged 8.3 points and 7.7 rebounds helping the Huskies take two of three games.
USM hosts NCAA regional meet
The USM men’s and women’s cross county teams hosted the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships, Sat. Nov. 15 in Cumberland. It was not an ideal day to wear shorts and tank-tops but the blustery conditions did little to deter the close to five hundred runners from more than 70 schools across New England that traveled to Twins Brooks Recreation Center to compete for the New England Division III crown.
Field Hockey headed to division tournament
The University of Southern Maine field hockey team recently won the Little East Conference (LEC) tournament with a 3-1 win over top-seeded Keene State. With the win, the Huskies earned automatic qualification into the 2003 NCAA Division III Championship.
Huskies knocked from tournament, complete strong season
The University of Southern Maine women’s volleyball team ended its season on Nov. 8, with a 3-0 loss to Plymouth State in the Little East Conference (LEC) tournament semi-finals. USM, playing without team leaders Cat Lewis and Mandy Desert, struggled to fend off Plymouth State’s strong attack and was knocked from the LEC tournament in straight sets.

I was wrong. Not about Rush Limbaugh and not about too much else; but, the Packers did not win, and I said they would. I was correct that Donovan McNabb is one of the league’s best players. He proved this leading his team to a dramatic fourth quarter comeback last Monday night.

During the Great American Smokeout, always held on the third Thursday of November, millions of people quit smoking for a day or more. This national event challenges people to quit using tobacco and raises awareness about the numerous ways to quit forever.
