The women’s tennis team lost to Bates 8-1 last Tuesday. Though the outcome of the match was not in favor of the lady Huskies they remain optimistic about the match. “Playing such a strong team so early gives our young team experience and practice,” said junior Catie McCarthy (Newport, VT).

The men’s soccer team began their season undefeated after two close games in the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Invitational in Troy, NY. Head Coach Eric Miller said this is the first season in a long time that the team has had such a strong start.

Taking the season one game at a time
USM Field Hockey Coach Bonny Brown-Denico (seventh year) will be looking toward her large group of freshman to fill the void left by the departure of 14 players from last season’s roster. Six of those 14 holes were made via graduation including leading scorers Renee Heath (28 points) and Sarah Dolley (18 points), and goaltender Jessie Superchi who achieved a 0.
Men’s cross country will build on experience
The adjustment from high school to college sports is always a big one for freshman athletes to overcome. In no sport is this adjustment more important than it is in cross country. Not only are the athletes that these freshman will be running against bigger, stronger and faster than they are used to competing against, they are also used to running a longer distance.
Freshmen carrying load for Men’s Tennis
With junior Andy Urbanak of Cornwall VT missing, most of the season due to a shoulder injury, the men’s tennis team has been carried by a trio of freshmen.
Adam Lemieux and Southern Maine baseball feeling good
The University of Southern Maine baseball team overwhelmed the visiting Monks of in-state rival St. Joseph’s College 12 to 4 in Gorham on Thursday afternoon before a supportive crowd of spectators who all seemed to be enjoying the pleasant weather. The victory extended USM’s winning streak to 11 games and was their 17th victory of their last 19 encounters
USM was led by the stellar performance of senior Brian Marshall who pitched seven strong innings, striking out seven, walking three and allowing only one earned run.

In just a short while they’ll be here – the dreaded FINALS! Many students have already experienced the fear and anxiety of finals and how to prepare or what to expect. Others have no clue on where to start and find it all very intimidating. A little stress can help you stay alert and ready to do your best, but too much stress can make you feel exhausted and miserable.

USM baseball team surging
After getting off to a slow start, the Huskies’ baseball team is on a roll. Following their first 11 games, USM was struggling at 4-6-1. Since then, the Huskies have caught fire, winning ten out of their last twelve games and outscoring their opponents (103-44).
Southern Maine softball continues smooth sail
The University of Southern Maine women’s softball squad continued their winning ways on Wednesday April 21 as they stormed to a sweep of Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. The non-conference doubleheader sweep improved the powerful Lady Huskies record to 26-5-1 and increased their latest winning streak to four games.
