Although many people probably wonder why University of Southern Maine does not annually have a formal or semi-formal dance, the question rarely arises.
But there’s something new being planned for this semester.
“The best is yet to come,” according to Leslie Rocheleau, a student and resident assistant who is helping to plan USM’s first formal dance in recent memory.
Have you ever had the feeling of being “trapped” on campus for hours upon hours while waiting between classes? You don’t want to leave because you’ll lose your parking space, but after a while you just can’t study anymore.
This is the life of a commuter student.

All students are about to be assessed a fee based upon their ‘credit hours’ to build a parking garage for a mere 600 vehicles that appears to be pacifying the City of Portland and not as an accommodating remedy to the parking crisis at USM.

How refreshing to know that crime still does pay! As I believed it would happen, the issue regarding the removal of The Free Press has been swept under the rug. One member of the Student Senate has told me the case of Senator Pergola and his involvement of the removals of our paper and the suppression of free speech has, in effect, been forgotten.

Thank you for your insightful article on the parking fee increase (the Student Senate is protecting whose interests . . . their own?) and your strong editorial condemning the increase. Subsidizing parking by assessing fees on all student credit hours penalizes those students who believe it is better to reduce pollution by getting to campus another way.

I am outraged over the proposal to increase the parking fee to almost three times what students are paying now. $100 to $200 dollars for a parking space that you’re not even guaranteed to get is extreme, and many students cannot afford it.
USM has many students who have children and families to take care of and simply cannot afford another couple hundred dollars for school.

The first time it was a shock.
A couple years ago I was walking through the parking lot in front of Portland’s Woodbury Campus Center and I saw somebody studying in their car. I didn’t understand why someone would do that.
Then I started to see it more often.
The University made mistakes handling an asbestos discovery in the Gorham childcare building, according to a top University official and frustrated parents.
“The parents weren’t happy and we (the administration) weren’t happy. We should have done it differently,” said Craig Hutchinson, vice president for Student Development.
Portland planning board members criticized USM’s plan for additional faculty and staff parking at last week’s meeting.
University officials addressed the need for additional parking once construction begins on the Science Building in Portland this spring.
Faculty and staff are expected to lose 117 spots and the University is trying to create 37 additional spaces, just one-third of the total loss.

A motor vehicle hit and run was reported in the Woodward lot.
Several people were found fighting in front of Phillipi Hall. Police broke up the fight upon arrival.
As a result, Christian W. Maki, 19, of Hastings Hall, was charged with obstructing government administration when he allegedly interfered with the officer who was trying to break up the fight.
Two female residents found a man hiding in the closet of their dorm room at Phillipi Hall, last Thursday. The two women entered their room around noon and discovered the man hiding.
The intruder, who is described as 5’10 to 5’11, 160 pounds with dark blonde or brown hair, abruptly left the room when the women discovered him.
The majority of the USM community agrees with the decision to have a parking garage built on the Portland campus; however, the feelings aren’t as consistent in regards to the increase of parking fees.
Currently a parking decal costs $35. The proposed $4 per credit hour fee will raise the price to $96 next year for a student taking 12 credit hours.
Practice for the women’s hockey team begins with more than 20 women of an average height of five-foot-four skating laps around the ice. As they skate by, one can see pony tails of varying lengths peeking from beneath their white helmets bearing their numbers.
In hockey, icing is when a player hits the puck from one side of the red center line down the ice past the goal line on the other side of the rink, but not into the goal, and a member of the other team then touches the puck first.
The offending team is penalized by a face-off in their defensive zone, or, the area of ice in front of their goal.

Two University officials were invited to discuss the new parking and transportation fee (see page 1).
Judy Ryan, executive assistant to the president and Bob Caswell, executive director of Media and Community Relations spoke about the fees and the proposed 1,200-space parking garage.

“A Beautiful Mind” is one of those “high quality films” that the studios hold until the end of the year for the purpose of gaining little gold men. Oscar is king in Hollywood this time of the year.
Some of these studio films are very good and deserve the praise they desperately seek, but others are usually jumbled messes that show evidence of too many fingerprints.
People whizzing down Forest Avenue may miss it, but Brea Lu Cafe does exist, and serves breakfast all day! The small brick building sits alone at 428 Forest with a banner running down its side that reads “BREAKFAST” in large red lettering. Inside the cafe are high tin ceilings and plenty of old varnished wood.
