It’s March and that means only one thing around the Gorham campus: playoffs. Once again the USM women’s basketball team is well on its way to continuing its eight-year streak of appearing in the NCAA women’s tournament.

Asked to recall the worst accident he encountered in his career, Head Athletic Trainer Matt Gerken recalled a hockey player a few years back who slit his leg with a skate. Blood went everywhere, but the athletic trainer on duty handled the situation as prescribed and applied pressure to the wound and then aided the doctor.

Four Lady Huskies named Players of the Week
Tiffany Jones once again leads the Southern Maine Huskies’ honor roll for this week by earning her fourth straight Little East Conference Rookie of the Week award. No other player in Little East women’s basketball has been honored as many times (six) as Jones this season.

It comes as no surprise that track and field as a whole goes quite unnoticed in everyday life. Most Americans only know about it every four years when the Olympics roll around and are broadcast for two and a half weeks. It is then that people become knowledgeable about the events included in a track and field meet.

When watching college sports either in person or on television, it is very easy to get lost in the on-field performance of a freshman athlete. Most times it is those performances of the athlete that we remember without considering the pressures the scholar athlete encounters throughout the first year of college life.

Why is ice hockey the “forgotten sport?”
New England has a rich tradition of sending a multitude of players to the National Hockey League. The University of Maine Black Bears hockey program had eight players, including Scott Pellerin and Paul Kariya, move from Orono to the pros. Yet, from attendance figures at the Costello Sports Complex, it is apparent that fans have little interest in ice hockey.
