9/23 – Sophomore Christa Hutchinson was the first University of Southern Maine runner across the line, leading the Huskies to a 10th place finish among the 21 teams competing at the 39th Annual Codfish Bowl Harrier Classic at Franklin Park in Boston.

USM women’s tennis team consisted only of six players and one new coach. Aside from being small, the team is also young, with four freshmen, three sophomores and two juniors. One of the juniors, Ashley Kirkpatrick (Sanford) is the only player who has returned to play for new head coach Lori-Ann Towle.
The USM women’s soccer team welcomed St. Joseph’s College and the Coast Guard Academy into town this weekend looking to find some offensive firepower on their home turf, but left with two losses, no offensive answers, and an unexpected defensive question mark.
Why did you choose USM? Well I can’t say that USM was my first choice, but when the college search and acceptance period started to get rocky USM seemed like a good choice because it has good English and Music programs and I thought I would have a good opportunity to play soccer.
Ann Conley may see only 20 students a day, but as a nurse practitioner and director at University Health Services, Conley may be one of the most important people students could encounter at the University of Southern Maine. “Health Services is a bridge between the school nurse and the traditional health care office.
Golf takes third Junior Adam Belleville (Ludlow, Mass.) scored an 80 to lead the Huskies golf team to a third place finish amongst eight teams competing at the 2006 Terrier Invitational at the Samoset Resort in Rockport on Tuesday, September 12. The Huskies finished with four players who all placed around 80-84 for a total score of 327.

USM’s volleyball team lost Tuesday to Bates College at Costello Gym in Gorham. The Huskies went down for the fifth straight time dropping their record to 2-6, while the Bobcats improve to 2-6.
Bates took the first two matches easily, as the Huskies struggled to work as a team.

Calling all skiers and snowboarders, get your equipment ready because USM’s ski and ride club is gearing up for another season of wintry fun.
Beginning in November, the club will travel every weekend to Sunday River or Killington in Vermont as well as to locations in New Hampshire.
Men’s soccer team beat by the Rhode Island College Anchormen
The men’s soccer team lost to Rhode Island College 1-0 in a Little East Conference match played Sept. 18 at the USM soccer field. Senior Kyle Teixeira (Warren, R.I.) scored the only goal of the match.

Huskies zip past Rams with a 2 to 1 lead SPORTS EDITOR – The Framingham State Rams never had a chance to catch up to USM’s Lady Huskies soccer team last Wednesday in a non Little East Conference match at the USM soccer field in Gorham. The Huskies beat the Rams 6-2.
Sophomore Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt), of the men’s cross country team, was named the Little East Conference runner of the week for Sept. 12. – Wheeler has placed first and twentieth in two events so far this season. At the season-opening New England College Invitational, Wheeler placed first with a time of – 27:58 to help bring his team to a first place finish at the meet.
The women’s tennis team dominated the three doubles matches against Salem State College Lady Vikings 7-2 in a Little East Conference match on Sept. 13. The win brings the Huskies conference record to 1-1. Several singles wins were also posted.
The Huskies defeated the Westfield State College Owls 2-1 in a Little East Conference game Sept. 10 at the Gorham campus. The game was tied up until the last three minutes of the game when senior Kayla Vaughan (Monroe) scored the game-winning goal. – This win gives the Huskies a 1-0 conference record and a 1-2 record overall.

Not only do major league baseball teams like the Red Sox trek to Florida to warm up for the season, but USM’s own Huskies recently returned from Clearwater, Florida after an intense eight-day spring training.
The team returned with a 7-4 record. They played at least one game per day with two double headers.
The Lady Huskies and new head coach, Meredith Bickford, have high hopes for the season.
“We will be a forced to be reckoned with this year,” Bickford said.
USM has only nine returning players, and of those nine, only three are seniors. The Huskies will have to rely on a mix of new and old players to help turn around a program that has struggled in its five year history.
Red Sox closer Keith Foulke has started the season with what many see as a meltdown. Despite making six saves in seven opportunities, Foulke is 1-3 and his ERA is more than double his career average at 7.07. More troubling than those numbers, Foulke has allowed five home runs in only 14 innings pitched, compared to only eight in 83 innings last season.
