Portland Commuter Life and Co-Curricular Programs at the Woodbury Campus Center in Portland is asking for board game donations. Board games are currently available at the Information Desk for students to sign-out and play with in the campus center.
One of Portland’s famous restaurant/breweries recently expanded to downtown Gorham. Sebago Brewing Company opened at its unique location on Nov. 21. Located in an old train station behind Hannaford Food and Drug, Sebago’s metropolitan-style atmosphere betrays its exterior with its stained wood walls and tables, large contemporary bar and high ceilings.
Director Michael Mann’s career has been leading up to this point. From his achievements in television with creating Miami Vice to his increasingly impressive films such as Heat and especially The Insider, he has developed a keen sense of storytelling and film direction.

The Kennedy Center’s American College Theater Festival selected the USM Theatre Department’s production of “The Good Woman of Setzuan” as one of six finalists from New England, according to Arts Promotions Director Mary Snell.
The production will now be considered for one of six that will go on to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.
Brandon Turner had any easy time Tuesday finding practice space for himself and his double bass. He won’t be so lucky when classes resume this week.
Music majors like Turner are trying to cope with a shortage of practice space in Corthell Hall on the Gorham campus.

As classes resume, things will be up and down again in Corthell Hall. But over the winter break, the elevators were grounded in the Gorham building that houses USM’s music program.
The elevators in Corthell and one of the elevators in Portland’s Payson Smith Hall were completely upgraded over the winter break.
One of the state’s best-known economists has forecasted that Maine’s economy will sustain no growth over the next six months. It will, however, start to improve again in the early summer.

Some people have noticed our Destinations section hasn’t included a lot of events. If you wanted to know what was going on at USM, our paper was not a good place to look.
If you’re in the newspaper business, that’s not a good thing.
So I’ve decided we’re going to do things a little different.
It’s a shame.
But when it’s about money, there are always losers.
We ran an article before the winter break examining the relationship between full and part-time professors.
With all the attention that got directed at some other things we were working on, the issue was sort of ignored.
The USM Police Department is urging people to guard their belongings following a rash of thefts on the Portland campus.
“In just a week, we’ve had six thefts reported and four of them were around the Sullivan Gym,” said Det. Sergeant Ron Saindon. “It seems to be a growing problem over the last week so we want to deal with it head on.
USM reported a decrease in most crimes on or near its campuses for 2000, including rapes, assaults and drug and alcohol disciplinary cases.
Each year USM provides reports on campus crime to protect the safety of the campus community and to help prevent similar incidents.
Thursday, Dec. 6GORHAM – Criminal mischief was reported after someone took a park bench from the Athletic Department and hid it in the bushes near Anderson Hall. The police don’t have any suspects.

GORHAM – Police responded to a possible arson after a small fire in a School Street parking lot almost spread to a parked car.
David Carey Jr. is a man with a determination to speak, or in this case write, the truth. Carey, an assistant professor of the History Department, has spent the past seven years traveling to Guatemala to give a little-known indigenous Mayan language an everlasting voice.
Just before the winter break asbestos was discovered in the basement of the Gorham Child Care program facility at 39 School Street.
None of the 50 children who attend the day care program were in the building at the time of the discovery.
After finding traces of asbestos in the basement of the building, Child Care Services was immediately relocated to the Hastings Formal Lounge.
One little-celebrated aspect of USM’s diversity is the school’s high percentage of student parents. On-campus daycare and the full selection of evening classes are making it easier for parents to get a degree. Easier, but not easy. The Women’s Resource Center sponsored an event last Wednesday that gave mothers and mothers-to-be a chance to get together and relax.
Apthous ulcers (“canker sores”) are the most common oral irritation in young adults. An apthous ulcer is a shallow erosion with a yellow-white center surrounded by a narrow, red ring. They are most often oval-shaped, with a diameter of 1/8 inch to one inch.

Tina Aldrich, coordinator of Portland Campus Recreation, spoke with the Student Senate regarding the various on-campus and outside recreational opportunities students can get involved in.
“Most activities are located on the Portland campus, but are available for all students who are part time and full time,” said Aldrich.
Parking/ RHA
The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is sponsoring a meeting Monday, Dec. 3 in Gorham addressing the issue of parking on the Gorham campus.
Students, staff, and faculty are invited to attend the meeting to state their concerns about parking, ask any questions, and voice any suggestions for improvements.
