“Don’t read my diary when I’m gone. OK, I’m going to work now. When you wake up this morning, please read my diary. Look through my things and figure me out.” So begins Kurt Cobain’s private journals.

“Inflated What?” – a response to last week’s article on the men’s soccer team
Count me OUT
I moved to Portland two years ago for several reasons. First, of course, was to go to school. After spending a year and a half at UMA’s Thomaston Center watching ITV classes, I was ready to have some real-time interactions with teachers who were actually in the room with me. Besides school, however, I knew that Portland had a friendly attitude towards gay people, as the non-discrimination ordinance seemed to suggest. I wanted to be in a place where it was safe to be whoever I was, and Thomaston, Maine, was not that place.
“Titles” are very powerful thing
Who am I? And why does that matter to you? After all, my last solution is to waste your time, least of all mine. I was never good at writing, though I’ve kept journal excerpts on and off my whole life. I should pursue it though – a photograph with even the best intentions can lose its meaning and purpose with the addition of a misleading story.
Letters from the Editor
I love thinking about sports. I love pondering baseball, analyzing it, absorbing it. I miss writing sports, hanging out with the team. There are many things that we enjoy so much, hold so dear that we have to let go in order to pursue greater things. In this trade-off, one may wonder: Is it worth it?
A letter from the president
After two years of research, collaboration and public dialogue facilitated by the USM Tobacco Task Force, I am pleased to announce the approval of a greatly strengthened tobacco policy for the USM community. The intent of this policy is to respect the rights of smokers and non-smokers while reducing exposure to second-hand smoke, providing an environment that supports a tobacco-free lifestyle, reducing the risk of accidental fire, and reducing the environmental impact of cigarette litter.
Condoms don’t offer any guarantees
Condom use has long been advocated as a nearly foolproof way to prevent the contracting of sexually transmitted diseases. But new research indicates this may not be the case. The Medical Institute for Sexual Health (MISH) recently released a scientific report called “Sex, Condoms, and STDs: What We Now Know.” The report reviews new research findings and suggests that even 100 percent condom use does not eliminate the risk of contracting any STD, even HIV.
Hangover relief 101
Last Tuesday two lectures on the effects of hangovers were held on the Gorham campus. The lectures were overseen by Robin Hoose, coordinator of the fitness center, office of recreational sports. Stephanie Dubois, senior health fitness major, ran the lecture in Anderson Hall.

The frustration of defeat
In the days leading up to the Tuesday night election, many people who had worked hard during the campaign process were left to wonder if their hard work would result in victory. For some the results were in their favor. But for others, the election results brought with them a difficult realization – their candidate had lost.
Professor speaks on gender similarities
Last Wednesday in the Woodbury Campus Center, sociology professor Dr. Michael Kimmel, author of “The Gendered Society” and “Manhood in America,” urged his audience to “live the refutation of that book.” He argued in his lecture “Mars, Venus, or Planet Earth” that the commonalities between the sexes far outweigh the supposed differences.
Sex offenders to register with USM
It is a fact that some sexual offenders are released back into the public. It is often believed that these individuals have been rehabilitated in state facilities. However, rehabilitated sex offenders can also lapse back into their old habits.
Will you find a spot?
The parking routine will take a drastic change for most of the campus community. Ground breaking for the parking garage will begin in early January. When the Bedford Street lot loses 350 spaces, only 175 spaces will be available for parking. The plans are for the construction of the 1,200-car garage to be completed by the spring semester of 2004. Until then, parking on the Portland campus will be messy.
Field hockey sprints into playoffs
USM’s field hockey team is number three in the LEC heading into the tournament this week. Plymouth State and Keene State are the top two in the Little East Conference. Defending LEC champion, Plymouth State, is undefeated in LEC play, Keene State has two losses and USM has three, including falling by one point to each of the top two.
Preseason on the ice
The zamboni man circled the arena in Gorham last week, preparing the ice for women’s hockey practice. The team takes the ice daily to tune up for the upcoming season begining Nov. 8 versus Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. From now until the season opener, the objective is to solidify the team and bring newcomers up to speed with the level of play in college.

Healthy Eating
With so much information about foods, it’s no wonder people are confused about what to eat. There are no good or bad foods. Regular eating habits distinguish normal eating. For most people this means eating three meals a day and including snacks to satisfy hunger.

Gorham Sebago vs Portland Sebago: Is there a difference?
The Sebago Brewing Company’s chain locations are the jewels of Cumberland County’s dining experience. The most recent addition to the Sebago family is the Gorham restaurant. Now USM students travelling between campuses can stop in and enjoy a great meal, guaranteed.
“Charlie” made Steve puke
Let’s get to the best part of “The Truth About Charlie:” Thandie Newton. Now that that is over, let’s get to the worst part of the movie: everything else.
The clothes make the man, in Camino Real
These are just some of the details in the costume shop in Russell Hall.
The shop and its many workers are in a flurry of activity getting finishing touches done on the latest production, “Camino Real” by Tennessee Williams. Costume designer Frederica Jepson designed all 66 costumes for this production. Kris Hall, costume shop supervisor, called this production the biggest she’s worked on since starting in 2000.

Staffer Talks
I’m daddy’s little girl. I’m the only child and daddy’s pride and joy. Being an only child is a lot of pressure. You are the only chance your parents have. If you mess up, you’re not only messing up your life, but theirs too since you’re their only shot. There is a constant striving to be the best at what you do solely to make your parents proud of their one and only.
