On Saturday night, three of the area’s most prominent bands will take the stage at the historic Geno’s Rock Club in Portland as The RattleSnakes, Metal Feathers and Foam Castles will be joined by aLex kEaton for one of the most anticipated shows of the year.
In only a few short years, the Portland based indie-rock band Metal Feathers have gained a devoted following from fellow local bands like Brenda and The Milkman’s Union, for not only their diligent DIY philosophy, but lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Jay Lobley’s innate ability to craft exceptionally catchy — albeit unpolished — indie-rock.
Rising from the ashes of Portland-mainstays Cult Maze, Metal Feathers combines the lo-fi wit of 90s stalwarts Pavement, with the brash guitar work of early 60s garage rock. Saturday’s show will serve as the record release party for their sophomore album “Contrast Eats the Slimey Green” which, along with their full-length debut “Statistically Marred,” is currently available as a free download on the Metal Feathers’ Bandcamp.
Also joining Metal Feathers for their night of celebration will be the Portland’s own Foam Castles. Just off the release of their impressive psychedelic-inspired electronic EP “Come Over To My House,” (read our review here) which is available as a free download on the band’s Bandcamp site, Tyler Jackson and company are sure to bring a diverse set of songs from their already impressive back catalog. Ranging from the hazy indie-pop of their early releases, to their more recent rock-oriented efforts like last year’s phenomenal “Molly’s Jungle,” there might just be no other band in Portland today as daringly diverse as Foam Castles.
The RattleSnakes will be headlining Saturday night’s show with their always chaotic, always incredible brand of post-punk noise. Combining Sonic Youth’s abrasive experimentation with lead singer Tara Cohen’s Sleater-Kinney in-your-face presence, The RattleSnakes have becoming one of the must see live acts of the area, opening for national acts like the legendary Mission of Burma in 2009 and the Screaming Females last year at SPACE Gallery. Their latest full-length “Spread for the Wide Eagle” is currently available as a download on the band’s Bandcamp. It’s pay what you want, but believe us when we say it’s worth every dollar you decide to pay.
Saturday night’s show is 21+ and gets a late start at 9 p.m. with a $5 cover fee. To celebrate the release of “Contrast Eats the Slimey Green,” Metal Feathers will have a one-time-only run of physical CD’s available for sale in the lobby for a few dollars. Geno’s Rock Club is of course located at 625 Congress St. in Portland.
Jay Lobley’s Metal Feathers is so good. How good? We’ve included “Fuzzy” from “Contrast Eats the Slimey Green” below:
