USM students are organizing a Relay for Life event to raise money for the fight against cancer. The event, in which “teams” camp out overnight and have at least one representative walking around the track at all times throughout the night, will be held at the field house on the Gorham campus.
“Every one of us has been touched by cancer in some way – a family member, friend, roommate, professor, or you personally may be a cancer survivor,” said TJ Williams, the USM Relay for Life chair in a press release.
According to the press release the Relay for Life was started in 1985, when colorectical surgeon Dr. Gordy Klatt completed a 24-hour walk around a track in Tacoma, WA, raising $27,000 to support the American Cancer Society.
Relay for Life Events will also be held at other colleges in Maine, including Bodoin, Colby, and the University of Maine at Machias, Farmington, and Orono.
