Students have a chance to meet prospective employers at USM’s annual job fair, which will be held Tuesday, March 13 from noon to 4:30 p.m. in the Sullivan Recreation and Fitness Complex in Portland.
“It’s important for a student to start networking and seeing what jobs are out there, whether they’re looking for job now or for when they graduate,” said Maggie Guzman from the Office of Internships and Career Placement in Student Success.
Student Success is providing help on their website for students going to the job fair. There’s sample questions to ask, ways to plan ahead, tips for making the most out the experience and interviewing and resume advice.
Guzman said students should bring their resume if they’re looking to apply, while others are also recommended to bring it. “If any students would like someone to review their resume for the job fair, our office would be happy to accommodate that and review any resumes they have,” she said.
Currently 83 employers have registered for the fair, and Guzman said she expects five to ten more to join. “We try to broaden the pool, so it’s helpful for all majors,” she said.
Guzman said both students and employers have been pleased with the job fair. Guzman, who graduated from USM in 2010, said she only went to the job fair as a senior. “I kind of wished I had gone to job fairs when I was an underclassman because I didn’t really have an idea of what jobs were out there when I was graduated,” she said.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information and advice for students visit: http://www.usm.maine.edu/success/jobfair/.
