USM students Mary Ann Klement and Daniel Gay are recipients of the 2011 Woodrow Wilson-Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowships for Aspiring Teachers of Color. Both receive a $30,000 stipend to complete a master’s degree in education and prepare to teach in a high-need school. Gay and Klement are two of 25 fellows chosen nationwide.
The USM Graduate Teacher Education Program was designated in May 2010 to be one of 29 campuses nationwide to receive the WW-RBF Fellowship beginning in the 2011-2012 academic year. USM nominated Klement and Gay. WW-RBF chose 50 students from those nominated and awarded the fellowship to 25 of those students.
Both students are slated to graduate in the spring. Klement is an English major and Gay is a theater major. Both plan on applying to USM’s Extended Teacher Education Program after graduation.
The Fellowships for Aspiring Teachers of Color was established in 1992 by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund to help recruit, support and retain individuals of color as public education teachers and administrators. The program was transferred in January 2009 to the Woodrow Wilson Fund.
