The Maine Center for Public Health board of directors has voted to move the organization’s activities to the Cutler Institute for Health and Social Policy in the Muskie School of Public Service at USM, according to a university press release.
The center, which has served as Maine’s public health institute since its founding in 1999 will transition to the Muskie School effective February 2011.
“This transition will provide stability and preserve the historic mission of the Center, something that has become hard to achieve as a small, stand-alone nonprofit entity,” said Shawn Yeardly, chair of the center’s board. According to the center’s website, its mission is to increase the health of Mainers through knowledge, influencing policy and public health practice.
Andy Coburn, who chairs the Muskie School’s academic and research programs in population health and health policy said the move will strengthen the public health institute’s ability to support population health improvement through enhanced access to public health education and training.
