The Gorham Events Board kicked off their weekly Thirsty Thursday event last week with potty-mouthed magician, Frank Deville.
Deville, who billed himself as “Your Girlfriend’s Favorite Magician,” is not the first to successfully mix comedy and magic, but he stood out and made it look effortless. With the stage covered primarily in pink props, his witty performance focused on quick slight of hand bits mixed with card tricks and a truckload of innuendo.
Leading with a purposely botched mind-reading trick that ended in a female audience member receiving a box of chocolates, Deville quickly laid out the tone of the rest of the evening. After the brief introduction he quickly segued into a number of other unique and standard magic tricks, often interacting or drawing on volunteers from the crowd to help add to or complete a trick. Frank’s quick hands were often followed by his quick mouth. He kept the crowd drawn in with the quirkiness of his comedy while doing something completely unexpected and amazing while we weren’t looking.
The one trick that had audience members on the edge of their seats was called “Danger Balls.” The trick was a modified version of the classic Russian Roulette — with a twist. Using identical pink paper bags with a spiked wooden board placed inside one (like a bullet inside of a revolver) he began mixing them around on the floor. With the assistance of some volunteers he chose a bag and stomped on it. Frank only risked his feet, but the feeling of nervousness and fear throughout the crowd grew with every bag eliminated. With only two of the original four bags left the crowd reached a fever pitch. The moment his feet hit the floor unharmed for the last time, a collective wave of relief swept across the crowd.
According to organizing members in the Gorham Events Board roughly 180 students attended, with practically every seat taken or called for by the beginning of the show.
The GEB holds their weekly “Thirsty Thursday” weekly in the Brooks Student Center. The next event is Rodeo Night on Sept. 9.
This is a really nice article Thanks so much.
