FOR 35 STUDENTS ON THE GORHAMCAMPUS, LABOR DAY LIVED UP TO ITSNAME.
From USM, 35 students worked all day on Labor Day doing five community service projects in Gorham. Overseen by Kate Rotroff of the Gorham Center for Volunteers and Community Education, the students painted the Gorham town gazebo, the “snack shack” at the little league baseball field, the deck at the Gorham Recreation Department and ten soccer goals at the Little Falls Recreation area.
The project was organized by the office of the Dean of Student Life as Welcoming Weekend activities for new students and as a means of encouraging civic engagement at USM. The Office of the Dean of Student life will be offering community service projects every Friday throughout the academic year, as well as ongoing roles as mentors and tutors and leadership roles through AmeriCorps.
SENATE MAKES COMMITTEEAPPOINTMENTS
The 34th Student Senate held its second meeting last Friday in the fourth floor of the Glickman Library. On the docket was the filling of seats on the senate committees. Amanda Blake, Daniel Johnson and Michelle Alger were appointed to the Finance Committee. Michelle Alger was also appointed to the Public Relations Committee along with Sergio Descart, David Colson and James McKeon. Amanda Slattery was appointed to both the Appointments Committee and the Student Affairs Committee. David Colson was also put on the Student Affairs Committee. Sergio Descart was also appointed to the Violations Inquiry Committee.
Other business was the appointment of Jeff Billodeaux as General Manager of Gorham TV (GTV). On acceptance of his position Billodeaux said, “We’re going to try and keep progressing. We want to get more things involved on campus and bring the campus to light.”
Among this week’s concerns was the lack of space on the Gorham Campus for residence senators living there. Said one senator, “It’s kind of a big thing because we represent a big part of the University and there’s no such office. We need a small space where senators can be available for students.”
