On Sunday November 14 students in an Opera Workshop, directed by Ellen Chickering, will present staged and costumed scenes from three famous operas. The performance takes place at 2 p.m. in Corthell Concert Hall on the USM Gorham campus. A short aria from the “Marriage of Figaro” by Mozart, will be followed by a more extensive piece from Puccini’s “Suor Angelica.” The evening features the advanced singers with a string quartet in the Baroque opera, “Xerxes,” by Handel.
Peter Martin conducts the USM Concert Band and USM Wind Ensemble in a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 21, of various works. The Wind Ensemble will perform “Fantasia for Seven Trumpets” by Eric Ewazen, and Arthur Bird’s “Serenade for Ten Wind Instruments.” Featured on the Concert Band portion of the program is Nancy Galbraith’s “With Brightness Round About It,” and Ron Nelson’s “Medieval Suite.” Senior music major Susan Bragg of Owls Head will conduct William Schuman’s work, “Chester.” The concert will be held in McCormack Auditorium at Gorham High School.
National music educator Mimi Zweig will present a workshop for teachers of violin, “Establishing a Healthy Foundation” It will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 5 in Corthell Concert Hall, on the USM Gorham Campus. The fee for participant registration is $40 per person. For more information call Terry at 878-5991. The workshop will cover the fundamentals of how to find the most natural physical way to approach string playing.
