SPORTS FOR THE LAYPERSON
How is a cross-country meet scored?
A cross-country team’s top five finishers contribute to a team’s overall score. After a race is completed a team’s score is determined by totaling the places of the top five finishers. A team taking the top five positions in a race would total 15 points. A team with runners finishing, first, fifth, 10th, 15th and 16th would score 47 points – the sum of its top five places. In any given meet the team with the lowest score is determined the winner.
