If you thought The Roots couldn’t get any better, then you haven’t heard their latest studio album, “Phrenology.” The Roots go above and beyond the expectations of their fans to create another great musical experience for their listening audience. Fascinating lyrical and rhythmic combinations set this album apart from the more commercial hip-hop that has recently hit the record stores. The Roots have long been known as one of the only hip-hop groups actually to play their own music. Lengthy instrumentals prove that each member of The Roots have grown as musical artists.
The first single “Break You Off” features R&B artist Musiq on the hook. The track goes all out to show you their progression as musicians. Right when you think the song is over, it goes on for approximately three more minutes, implementing a mix of hip-hop and jazz that will force you to feel the groove. The next single off the album will be “The Seed (2.0),” and the groove doesn’t stop here. The song features rising star Cody Chesnutt who adds smooth, soulful lyrics that will make you guys take out the Barry White compact disc when your girl comes over and put in the new Roots album.
The album is not just for the ladies. Tracks like “Rock You,” “Water,” “Rolling with Heat,” and “Quills” will satisfy your need for the hard core, raw dog type of style. There are some other well-known names featured on the album such as Talib Kweli, Nelly Furtado, and Jill Scott.
So, if you thought all hip-hop was negative or jiggy, think again. The new Roots album is funky and soulful with beats that are played extremely well. “Phrenology” is not just for rap fans; the album is for anyone who likes good music.
