Don’t try this at home
First came the computer file, then filesharing and now: Copyright infringement lawsuits. Across the nation a whole generation of computer users attempting to pass information back and forth speaks the language of Napster, Kazaa or BitTorrent. While the act of filesharing breaks no laws, sharing copyrighted material like music or movies does.
Work study fraud prompts change in Athletics Department
Since the work study fraud in the Athletics Department first became public in late November of 2004, little has changed in the University’s monitoring process but the Athletics Department incorporated several new changes, including new manuals, more strict training processes and policies that emphasize that students caught violating work-study policy will be fired.
Race, ethnicity and power
University Counseling Services and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs will host a “Multicultural Forum” every Wednesday morning at Portland’s Woodbury Campus Center.
The forum, held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. is titled: “Race, Ethnicity and Power.” Meetings will consist of films and informal group discussions.
Water main bursts
For those students, faculty and staff who saw the water outside the Science Building please know: USM is not installing a new water park. A break in a water main created a small river on Falmouth Street and flooded the basement of the Sullivan Sports Complex on Monday.
Pipe burst in Portland Hall
Imagine where you would like to be at 5:51 on a Saturday morning. The answer probably would not be: standing on the sidewalk of Congress Street, half asleep in the freezing cold. This is where the 277 residents of Portland Hall ended up on January 22 after an early morning fire alarm.

People going nowhere in parking garage
A 30 minute wait at the exit of the parking garage caused prompted complaints to be posted on the USM information list serve on Thursday, January 27. The crux of the complaints stemmed not from the wait, but the alleged poor customer service of the parking garage employees.
Campus Crime
Jan. 21 USM police found a bong in Gorham. Jan. 22 USM police caught minors with alcohol while on a routine walk through of Yankee Clipper in Portland Hall. Unknown persons defecated in a urinal in the fourth floor men’s room of Anderson Hall. Somebody backed into a police cruiser on the Gorham Campus.

Demosthenes (di-‘m?s-th&-“nEz): 384-322 B.C. Demosthenes’ greatest oration is entitled “On the Crown.” He delivered it in 330 BC. It was a review and justification of his public life and began with the words “I told you so, I told you so.” USM has a variety of illustrious speakers coming here every week.
New space for Gorham childcare?
Since 2002, USM’s child care has been scrutinized. While they consistently received accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children, in May 2002 the Classified Staff Senate found both the Portland and Gorham facilities “inadequate.
Toothaker continues Green Party success in Portland
It wasn’t the Washington State gubernatorial controversy and it wasn’t a Boxer Rebellion in Ohio. For USM political science major Jason Toothaker, the race for a seat on the Portland School Board came down to the closest possible margin: one vote. Maine Superior Court Justice Thomas Warren ruled on December 4 that Green Party candidate Toothaker won the race against Julia Finn, a Democrat, 3,219 votes to 3,218.
Consultants comb USM for signs of research capability
Have you ever wondered what happens inside the new science building on the Portland campus? According to Provost Joseph Wood, highly competitive research happens and he intends to make sure people hear about it. Earlier this month, Wood issued a memo to the University community regarding a team of external research consultants he has brought in to determine USM’s “institutional capacity for research, scholarship and creative activity.
Work-study students busted for fraud
A recent internal investigation into USM’s Athletic Department revealed 35 work-study students committed fraud by lying about how many hours they’ve worked.
Disobedient deviants detained
USM police charged four students on Saturday, Nov. 20 from Dickey Wood Hall for various infractions involving drugs and alcohol. Michelle Arsenault, Russell Hoit, Ryan Martin and Brad Pease were all issued a summons to appear in court for possession of alcohol by consumption, as all are minors.
Southern Maine Partnership recognized
The College of Education and Human Development’s Southern Maine Partnership received the 2005 Richard Wisniewski Award For Excellence in Teacher Education.

Maine recycles week: Mission USM
The University of Southern Maine’s Office of Environmental and Economic Sustainability defines sustainability as “the ability of current generations to meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” This plays itself out in the way the university recycles its waste, efficiency of energy use and oil resources.

Parfaits no longer contain gelatin
The yogurt used in the parfaits in the USM cafeterias no longer contains gelatin.
Ben Meiklejohn voted USM student representative to BOT
The 33rd Student Senate voted by secret ballot to reappoint Ben Meiklejohn as the student representative to the Board of Trustees. Senate Parliamentarian Adam Mirmelli nominated Meiklejohn for the position. Also nominated for the position, but not present at the meeting was Melissa Patent.
Student Senate knocks Red Cross policy
The Student Senate passed a proposal which resolves the donor eligibility as set by the Food & Drug Administration and the Red Cross as being discriminatory against homosexual men. The decision will not prevent the Red Cross from collecting blood on the campus.
Merger angers UMA staff
Since news of the University of Maine at Augusta merging with the University of Southern Maine, student and faculty groups at both campuses have been discussing both benefits and concerns. The faculties of the two universities have met officially for discussion.
