Finally—you’re adulting. You’ve moved out of the dorms or your parents’ house, and you’re in your own apartment! What’s the next step? Decoration, of course. But, no matter if you’re decorating your first apartment or your third, it’s always going to take time to make this space feel like home. To give you a little inspiration, we wanted to share six apartment interior design tips for students.
Add Window Treatments
Do you feel like something’s missing from your space? Window treatments, such as blinds or curtains, add privacy to your space and make your apartment look put together. People commonly overlook their living space’s windows, so be sure you keep yours in mind as you decorate.
Be Careful with Colors
You may feel tempted to go crazy with colors, especially if you’re starting out with an empty interior. If you incorporate too many colors into your décor, your space can look less mature. If you want to make your apartment feel more adult-y, stick to neutral colors, and then mix in a bright color that you enjoy.
Expertly Hang Art
In a dorm room, it was easy to thumb-tack a few posters on your walls and call it a day. But many apartment complexes won’t let you put holes in the walls. Plus, you can spot tacks from miles away. Instead, hang art with hooks that stick to the wall or lean framed prints against furniture.
Illuminate Your Space
Is your apartment looking a little dull? The overhead lights are likely a cause, and redecorating your place can be as simple as upgrading to lighting fixtures. Additional lights create a warm and inviting atmosphere, and with more light, you can pull off the illusion of a larger space.
Invest in Area Rugs
Whether you need to cover cold tile or stained carpet, the right area rug will effortlessly transform how your apartment looks and feels. They add color and texture without overwhelming your space—even just one will ramp up the luxury!
Match Hand-Me-Down Furniture
While the mismatched furniture you receive from loved ones will certainly give your space character, you’ll need to be careful with how you incorporate everything into your space. Curating a magazine-worthy apartment is all about experimenting with cohesiveness.
And there you have it—six apartment interior design tips for students. Even though you may only stay in this space temporarily, it’s still important to take the time to furnish it how you like. After all, no one wants to live in a space that isn’t uniquely them!
You have so many good tips. I’ve taken screen shots of several pages for future reference.
Hey Morgan, Many thanks such a lot for scripting this article! This is often stellar advice that i will be able to keep going back to as I complete my degree in Interior Design! Thanks again.

I bookmark this is perfect idea!!
I liked what you said about how a rug can add color and texture to a room without overwhelming the space and can cover cold tile. My aunt doesn’t have any carpet in her home and it is all cold tile and water and she would really like to get something else to walk on. She has been thinking about trying to make her home look a lot more inviting and getting some help from a professional could be really useful.
These are not for students only. I think this will be a reminder to other Interior Designers also. Thank you for those tips.
It was helpful when you explained how too many colors can make a space feel less mature. I’m helping my niece look at long term accommodation in my area since she’ll be starting her studies next semester. Thanks for teaching me these guidelines to keep in mind to ensure we decorate it in modern, stylish way.
Thanks a lot for such an informative article. It is really helpful
