UMS Board of Trustees pick James Page to replace Pattenaude as chancellor
James Page, CEO of the James W. Sewall Company in Old Town and adjunct of professor of philosophy at the University of Maine will be the new chancellor of the University of Maine System. UMS Board of Trustees Chair M. Michelle Hood announced the decision Thursday at the University of Southern Maine in Portland. Page will replace the current chancellor, Richard Pattenaude, who has served since 2007, in March.
Head of USM Foundation leaves university to become president of Maine Media Workshops + College
Meg Weston, vice president for advancement at the University of Southern Maine and president and CEO of the USM Foundation is leaving the university to take the helm as president at Maine Media Workshops + College. Weston’s last day at USM will be March 9, and she will begin her new job at the end of the month. The university has not yet chosen her successor.
USM women’s track sweep their 12th straight New England Alliance and LEC Championships
The University of Southern Maine women’s track team swept the Little East Conference and Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference to capture their 12th straight New England Alliance and LEC Championships Saturday at the USM Field House. The lady Huskies won by a 205 to 1324 margin over UMass-Dartmouth in the Little East and 168 to 136 over Worcester State for the Alliance title.

Planning for new Portland campus health center in the works
A cure may be on the horizon for students sick of trekking to Gorham to access University of Southern Maine health services thanks to a project currently in the works to reopen a student health center on the Portland campus.
Portland has been without a health services center since 2010. But now USM health and counseling services and the School of Nursing are teaming up to fill the void and provide services for students in Portland while also providing a learning opportunity to nursing students.
Presidential-candidate hopeful Ron Paul to visit USM on Saturday
Ron Paul, candidate for the 2012 Republican Party presidential nomination, is set to speak at the University of Southern Maine this Saturday. Paul is tentatively scheduled to speak at 11 a.m. in the Hastings Formal Lounge on the Gorham campus, according to Paul Madore, the state chairman for the campaign. He said the itinerary is still being developed for the rest of Paul’s visit to Maine.
Leaky, old house perfect fit for USM applied energy program
The USM-owned building at 19 College Ave. was built in the late 19th century as a private residence and has been used for a variety of purposes for the university, though it wasn’t in use when the department took it over in January. The applied energy program will be using it as a laboratory and research tool for students, and, if all goes to plan, the house will become a resource for the community as well.
