As the war on terrorism continues, scientists work diligently to understand its causes and possible solutions. USM Assistant Professor of Geography Michael K. Steinberg is one seeking those answers.

While most professors specialize in the arts, English, history or mathematics, Coleman is an expert in cryptozoology, “the study of hidden and as yet undiscovered animals.

PSAs are typically students who have an interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement. They are used by the USM Police Department to help with campus security.

I will not disagree that the parking here at USM needs some form of attention. However, the article in your paper implies that the only way to fix it is to build a parking garage, which leads to raising the price for parking. This is unnecessary and very expensive, especially for most college students.

It’s the day before winter break here at Portland Hall, and I am preparing for a nutritional change. The caf? will be closed to USM students for the break, so I head down to the food store to seek out Ramen Noodles and order four large pizzas for the week.

Vacation is supposed to be a time to relax and recharge for the coming weeks. However, this is hard for students living in non 9-month dorms to do.
Non 9-month dorm residents are not allowed back into dorms until 12:30 p.m. the Sunday before classes resume.

I am disturbed by the increase in the cost of parking for next year. I am a senior now and am graduating in May 2003. I feel that I should not have to pay the extra $60 to park in Portland. I would think that the juniors now would not want to pay $192 to park when they are seniors.

I’m writing in regards to the problem of tearing down bulletin boards. I certainly don’t condone what these people have done, but I think that I understand where they are coming from.
As a person who considers herself pro-life (NOT an anti-choice terrorist as one person would have described someone like me), there is no place for me on the USM campus where I can speak out without being ostracized.
I used to be a smoker. I loved it.
I loved the “after dinner” cigarette. The “break from work” cigarette. The “after class” cigarette. The “in the car” cigarette. The “I’m stressed out” cigarette. The “celebration” cigarette. The “after sex” cigarette. The “I’m bored and have nothing else to do” cigarette.
For the second time in as many days, a USM employee was attacked on USM property. On Feb. 14, a student in Hastings Hall assaulted USM police officer Benjamin Moreland. On Feb. 15, police responded to an incident at the Glickman Family Library on Forest Avenue in Portland where a USM library employee was assaulted.
The Student Senate unanimously approved a proposal late last week that could increase the Student Activity Fee by more than 50 percent next year.
The Senate proposal would increase the current fee of $39 to $60 for students taking 12 credit hours or more, $27 to $40 for those taking between six and 11 1/2 credit hours, and $13 to $20 for those taking fewer than six credit hours.
A University task force recently proposed banning smoking from all University property. Students speak out and University health officials explain reasons for the proposal.
The NCAA, or National Collegiate Athletic Association, is a voluntary association of over 1200 schools. It is through this organization that colleges make decisions on athletic matters on a national level. They enact rules and guidelines used throughout college sports.
Southern Maine men ended their season in the first round of Little East conference playoffs Feb. 19 in a game against the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs. The Huskies started out very favorably with a 27-21 lead just short of halftime. They played hard throughout the rest of the game and remained in striking distance, however giving up the win to UMD with a score of 78-67.
The women’s indoor track team has gone from practicing in parking lots and crowded hallways in its first year as a recognized team four years ago to practicing and competing in the sparkly new field house built a few years ago. This has not only raised the level of play, but also given Southern Maine a home field advantage this year for more meets than ever before.

Only four seasons since its inception, Southern Maine women’s hockey is at the top of the rankings.
Men’s indoor track wound down this season with the setting of three school records at the New England Div. III Championships at Bates College in Lewiston. Freshman Adam Lang broke the 600 meter record for the second week in a row at this meet with a time of 1:25.
For the sixteenth time in the last 17 years, Southern Maine women participated in the NCAA Div. III basketball tournaments, as well as brought home the Little East Conference Tournament Championship trophy for the eighth time in the last 10 years.
“We play our best ball at tournament time,” said coach Gary Fifield.
Chapped lips are a result of very dry skin on the lips. Dry skin occurs when the moisture, or water, content of the skin is decreased for any reason. The surface of the skin holds a certain amount of water and when the water content decreases, the skin becomes dry, itchy, and uncomfortable.
