Chants and flyers saying “NO” and “YES” on Question #3 turned the campus into a political war zone on Tuesday and Wednesday during the Student Senate elections.
Students overwhelmingly voted “No” on Question #3: 468 to 88. The 84 percent “No” vote will keep the Student Senate from assuming direct financial control of The Free Press and WMPG.
567 votes say it all. Just over 5 percent of the student body turned out to vote on the 31st Student Senate elections and referendum questions.
A contested Senate race, several write-ins, and high-impact referendum questions appear to have motivated students to get out and vote.

It is my responsibility to address issues related to the computer labs and classrooms. The Printing Charges Frequently Asked Questions sheet distributed in the labs (quoted by Ms. Pitcairn) was to try to answer the most pertinent anticipated questions.

Your story titled “New policy: students will pay to print” quotes a student who has the impression that the box that pops up when one prints in the computer labs or libraries is a survey. It is NOT a survey.
It is intended to inform students that a charge will be instituted by the fall semester and to get them to ask themselves if they really need that printout.

When I first came to USM, I thought that it was a pretty decent place. Sure it had its little problems, but what place doesn’t. Now that my freshman year is almost complete, I honestly don’t think I want to return next year.

Often when people hear the words, “spring break,” what they think is stumbling drunk kids, baring it all. That’s no myth. But there is another side to tell, and it’s about some of us who chose to do some common good through USM’s Alternative Spring Break program.
I like reporting on politics, not being part of them.
But that’s exactly what happened last week during the Student Senate elections when the freedom of the press at USM was challenged. Some members of the Student Senate didn’t think there was anything wrong with asking students to vote on a proposal to dissolve the Student Communication Board, the governing body of The Free Press and WMPG.

At 11:28 p.m. in Gorham, at Anderson Hall, an alcohol violation was reported.
“In Africa a woman with AIDS is often thrown out of her marriage and abandoned by her family,” said Shalome Odokara of Portland’s Women in Need, Inc.
Last Tuesday, Odokara spoke about the AIDS epidemic’s effect on women in Africa and the United States. She addressed the complex roles that poverty, discrimination, gender roles, stigma and warfare play in the disease as well as what her organization does to support women suffering from the AIDS crisis.
University officials are investigating allegations that a psychology professor used racist and homophobic comments in videotaped lectures.
A committee has been formed to review the videotaped lectures of Associate Professor of Psychology John Broida which were distributed to 70 students in a Web-based introductory psychology class.
A measure to increase the Student Activity Fee is shot down

The Student Senate proposal to raise the Activity Fee by as much as 50 percent was defeated when the issue went to referendum vote in last week’s Student Senate elections.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the student body will make an important decision for two of their campus media outlets, The Free Press and WMPG.
The Senate election ballot will have a referendum question asking students if they want to “discharge” the Student Communication Board.
ST. PAUL, Minn. The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team was 52.4 seconds and a questionable overtime penalty call away from its third national championship. Words & Images hosts a day long event in conjunction with the University’s Celebrate Writers Festival, entitled Words & Images 2002: The Event, A Celebration of Maine’s Literary and Visual Creativity. The event, scheduled for this Friday, April 12 at the USM, will coincide with the release of the much-anticipated 2002 Edition of “Words & Images.

Genital warts are caused by a virus called HPV (human papillomavirus), one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. An estimated 40 million Americans are infected with HPV, with 1 million new cases each year. HPV is the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 60 different types.
Editor’s Note: The following is a column submitted by an avid participator in pick- up basketball at USM, and would like it not go go forgotten in the wake of NCAA championships and NBA playoffs.
In the spotlight is organized basketball: flashy uniforms, stands full of screaming fans, colorful announcers, coaches pacing the sidelines, little boys mopping the parquet during time-outs.
Fans lined their lawn chairs along the orange netting around the gravel, stones, and concrete Friday afternoon to watch the Southern Maine Huskies baseball team in their blowout home opener.
The new 500-seat Towers Field stadium is in the process of construction, with only the playing surface and concrete dugouts completed, just enough for regular season play.
EXPLODING STAR
So, why do stars explode?
Well, to answer that question, it is prudent to first ask and answer the question:

Professor passes on
A former USM faculty member, John Romanyshyn, died March 15. Romanyshyn was professor emeritus of social work. He joined USM faculty as a professor of social work in 1967, after teaching at UMO from 1946 to 1967. He was the first chair of USM’s undergraduate Social Work Department.
