Very loosely based on a 1997 Esquire article by Pulitzer Prize winner Mike McAlary, “City by the Sea” creates a nice leisurely pace in establishing its characters, conflicts and location. Aided by the skilled hands of director Michael Caton-Jones, the film escapes both the frazzle of the slicker cop pictures and the boredom of the more melancholic.
Rolling requeim honors and remembers Sept 11 victims
September 11, 2002 at 8:46 am, the bell in Corthell Tower rang for one minute. Following the bell was a chorus of students, faculty and members of the community as they joined in a worldwide effort in singing Mozart’s Requiem at 8:47. The same song was sung in every state and throughout many countries.
Quick, easy, and cheap.
Marcy’s Diner, located at the corner of Oak and Free Streets, is a quaint, out of the way oasis for any breakfast or lunch starved businessperson, sleep-deprived student, or passer-by.
“Objects of Influence” Faculty Art
Many of the great artists in history were influenced by someone equally remarkable. T.S. Elliot was influenced by Joseph Conrad’s novel “Heart of Darkness” Elvis Presley’s music was influenced by the sound of Motown. But for Art Department chair Michael Shaughnessy, a picture of his grandfather’s architectural thesis is his influence and inspiration.
You from Jersey? I’m from Maine.
It never crossed my mind that I wasn’t a Mainer, until I’m told that I look like I’m from New Jersey.
Letter from the Editor
Sept. 11 has changed our lives. The Ad Council played an ad Sept. 11 that showed a row of houses in an average neighborhood, and the voice over explained, “On Sept. 11 terrorists tried to change America forever.” The screen fades, then comes back up, each house bedecked with at least a couple of American flags each. “Well, they succeeded.” This ad may have made us feel patriotic on that first Patriot Day, but, is that distracting from the real ways we all have changed?

Patriotism builds on Portland campus
Seeing the flag raised at half staff last week by the construction crew was a sight to see for all of us here at USM. The flag was raised near the creation of the new Bio/Science Wing on the Portland Campus in remembrance of the victims of September 11. Jamie Schmidt, foreman (left), and Michael O’Rourke, mechanic (right), of Ranor Inc. take a minute to display their patriotic flair and respect.
Parking Garage Plans Submitted to City Hall
USM’s Facility Management department submitted tentative plans for the Community Education Facility/Parking Garage to the Planning department in City Hall. The plans submitted to City Hall call for a new Parking Garage to be built at the Bedford St. Parking lot, which is bordered by Surrenden, Bedford, and Winslow streets.
Proposal to change senate meeting site fails
A proposal to only have Student Senate meetings at 11 Baxter Blvd failed 4 to 8. Parliamentarian Jessica Roy wanted to eliminate the second sentence from Article 8, section A of the Student Senate Constitution that states “Student Senate meetings shall alternate between Portland and Gorham.”
Tobacco policy revised; President to announce changes
Revising the tobacco smoking policy is getting smoke in the campus community’s eyes. Next fall smokers on campus will have designated smoking areas through out campus. However, the only change for this fall is all residence halls are smoke free.
Remember. Reflect.
Some students embraced, others stayed silent as the USM community reflected the events of one year ago. A ceremony on the Gorham campus remembered the lives lost on Sept 11.

“The Good Girl” plays off that nagging feeling we all have about the direction our lives have taken, and the regrets of opportunities missed. It examines the unfulfilled life, but refuses to offer a solution. The film’s depiction of life, including the lack of easy answers and outcomes, that it is perhaps one of the most truthful pieces of filmmaking in recent years.
The Starving Artist
On my first official endeavor into the wonderful world of food criticism, my companion and I partook of an interesting dining experience.
Only a short walk from the Peaks Island launch, we casually walked into Happy Cooking. The inside is quite different from its “general store” outside appearance.
From Maine to Monk: USM Alumni Tony Shalhoub
Students who watch USA Network’s new hit television series Monk have something in common with the show’s leading man: matriculation at USM.
Tony Shalhoub played Antonio Scarpacci, the cab driver on NBC’s television series Wings, from 1991-1997. Now, Shalhoub stars as Adrian Monk, the obsessive-compulsive private detective solving San Francisco’s toughest crimes by noticing the smallest overlooked details.
Of love and war, “La Promise” offers hope
After Sept. 11 Americans were left with many questions unanswered. How could this happen? Who did this to us? This led to even more difficult questions of our reaction. Should we take revenge? Go to war? In finding the answers one must look from all different angles to find a just answer.

Freshmen bulk up soccer teams for ’02 season
The men’s and women’s Husky soccer teams returned to the 2002 fall season with a large number of freshmen leading the way. The eight men and ten ladies entering their first year should expect more responsibility on their team.
Women’s head coach Steve Quinones said the freshmen have adapted well and seem to show great potential for the upcoming season.
