Volleyball “kills” UMass Boston
USM volleyball had a successful week, defeating UMass Boston in straight sets, last Wednesday in Gorham. In the victory Freshman Amanda Starkey had a team high 13 kills. Sophomore Mandy Dessert helped with her team leading 24 assists. It was their 7th victory of the season leading them into the weekend tournament in Farmington.
Women’s soccer has chance at playoffs despite rough start
Last Wednesday the USM women’s soccer team was punished by a superior Bowdoin team. The women of Bowdoin wore all-black uniforms and towered over the USM team. They easily overpowered our Huskies and took control of the ball and the game as if they rightfully owned the field.

Breaking sports news: Women’s tennis takes Little East Conference
The women’s tennis team after beginning the season with a 1-5 overall record has won the Little East Conference Women’s Tennis Championship. The team had three wins and no losses during the week previous to the Little East tournament and rode their momentum into the weekend.

The Portland Events Board is carrying on the tradition of bringing entertainment to campus. Joe Frechette, PEB chair announces the kickoff of “Weekly Wednesdays”, a program which brings live music and entertainment to the Portland Campus.
Local reggae band Stream will play on Wednesday Oct.

Hannibal Lecter is the perfect villain because we will never understand him. He will always be smarter, more cultured and more sinister than our mortal minds can comprehend. He is the superman, existing on a level beyond us. But as his motivations are unimaginable to us, we are still fascinated by him.
A perfect day for apple picking
A short 15-minute drive from Portland lies the Snell Family Farm. The Snell Farm has an abundance of trees, plants and a whole lot of nature. There are mums, lambs ears of corn, potatoes and pretty much anything else one could ever want from a farm. From apples to sunflowers, butternut squash to gourds, all grow on this beautifully manicured farm.

Director Kellsy MacKilligan begins rehearsal with quick warm up exercises for her actors. The actors are rehearsing for the Student Performing Artists (SPA) show, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” by Steve Martin. The actors gather round in a circle to start a multitude of tongue twisters and breathing exercises.

I was ten years old when I realized I liked girls. I thought liking girls was impossible. Homosexuality was a topic that I never pondered or even overheard grown-ups talking about when I was a kid.

There’s no need to yell
I don’t consider myself easily offended. I am not one of those persons who looks for things to complain about. But I did find myself at a loss for words last Monday night at about 11 p.m. I went outside for my before-bedtime cigarette, and there was a group of boys from a fraternity in the parking lot outside Russell Hall on the Gorham campus. I couldn’t see them, but I could hear them.

Student conduct codes under scrutiny
The purpose of the student conduct code is to ensure students’ ability to be secure on campus and to excel in their studies. The case in Orono has evoked criticism of the effectiveness of the conduct code. Orono abides by the same set of conduct codes as USM and the entire University of Maine system.
Speak Out! program aims to reduce violence proactively
This June Jerry Boivin, a 57-year-old gay man, was allegedly beat up on Congress Street. The assailants attacked Boivin and his partner for being gay. Two men attacked Boivin in broad daylight, screaming anti-gay remarks, as he lay helpless. This assault had such a profound effect on Gina Capra, a junior in the Women’s Studies program, she decided something had to be done about violence that stems from discrimination and ignorance.
Silent witness program assists USM PD anonymously
Some people find the cloak of anonymity comforting. A program utilized by the University of Southern Maine Police Department now allows such people to report crimes while remaining unrecognized.

Do you Blackboard?
Can a student on the UMaine Fort Kent campus get access to a class that is offered only on the USM Portland campus? As technology advances at the University of Maine, the answer is increasingly ‘Yes.’ A course developmental tool, Blackboard, has been implemented statewide in the UMS system.
