The four and a half hour Student Senate meeting on Friday was filled with heated debate.
Senate Chair reacts to unprecedented move
Although she heard complaints about Sen. Jessica Roy’s performance, Sen. Leah Wentworth was surprised at the motion to have Roy removed from her position as chair of the Violations Inquiry Committee and thus as Senate parliamentarian.
Roy: Zero forewarning
Sen. Jessica Roy is in shock. In a matter of minutes Friday morning she went from Student Senate parliamentarian and executive board member to an e-board outcast and trod-upon member of the Senate.
Student Senate leadership in shambles
Sen. Jessica Roy was voted out of her position as chair of the Violations Inquiry Committee (VIC) and thus out of her position as Senate parliamentarian by the 31st Student Senate Friday. Two-thirds of the present members voted her out of her position through a secret ballot.
University Student Activists make noise for peace
A group of students gathered on the Gorham campus to protest the possible war with Iraq. The group behind the protest was the University Student Activists (U.S.A.). The group advertised all over the campus via fliers, urging students to meet in the courtyard of Upton-Hastings Hall at noon on Jan. 26. The request was met by a small but passionate group of people who brought drums, pots, and bottles to use as noisemakers.

Health Beat: It’s wintertime!
Frostbite is a common injury resulting from exposure to cold. Simply defined, it’s the freezing of the skin and/or the bodily tissues under the skin. The fluids in the body tissues and cellular spaces freeze and crystallize. This can cause damage to the blood vessels and result in blood clotting and lack of oxygen to the affected area.
USM’s tracksters run away unnoticed
It comes as no surprise that track and field as a whole goes quite unnoticed in everyday life. Most Americans only know about it every four years when the Olympics roll around and are broadcast for two and a half weeks. It is then that people become knowledgeable about the events included in a track and field meet.

Tiffany Jones once again leads the Southern Maine Huskies’ honor roll for this week by earning her fourth straight Little East Conference Rookie of the Week award. No other player in Little East women’s basketball has been honored as many times (six) as Jones this season.

The pressures and adjustments of the freshmen athlete
When watching college sports either in person or on television, it is very easy to get lost in the on-field performance of a freshman athlete. Most times it is those performances of the athlete that we remember without considering the pressures the scholar athlete encounters throughout the first year of college life.

Staffer talks: It has come to my attention that there is not sufficient student involvement in campus activities. I wonder at this phenomenon. Is it that our busy lives refuse to permit a few spare moments to contribute to our community?
The Roots: jiggy hip-hop? Not their style
If you thought The Roots couldn’t get any better, then you haven’t heard their latest studio album, “Phrenology.” The Roots go above and beyond the expectations of their fans to create another great musical experience for their listening audience.
Could it be the nose?
First of all, let’s get the nose out of the way. Is it possible for a piece of prosthetic to improve someone’s acting? Not that Nicole Kidman is a bad actress. In fact she is very good, but in “The Hours” Kidman completely emerges herself into Virginia Woolf and it’s difficult to judge how much the nose helps. Either way, it is a fantastic performance by both.
Anybody seen my burrito?
Disco tunes blast as Mick opens the door to Granny’s Burritos on 420 Fore St. We are no longer in 2003, dressed casually in jeans and sweaters, but 1973. Mick is wearing a cream leisure suit with a cherry red polyester shirt. He holds the door for me and says, “Come on in, little lady.
A history of “Scandalous Eyes”
How often do you question your beliefs? There was a time not long ago when white men dressed up in black face to entertain the merry masses and sheet music covers displayed oppressive stereotypes of black culture. Black face is a tradition in which travelling minstrel performers painted their face with coal in the early 20th century. This practice, not exclusive to white men, was an unquestioned element in society.

A light step in the right direction
Footprint: Suppose you eat 50 pounds of pasta a year. To make this pasta, grain must be planted, harvested, transformed into spaghetti (or linguine or macaroni elbows), packaged, and transported to your table. The entire process from planting the grain to boiling the pasta uses natural resources such as land, oil, and water. It is not hard to find out how many acres of farmland are needed to grow the grain.
