Dudley Greeley says he doesn’t mind doing laundry. He and his wife do not have a drier, preferring instead to sun-dry their clothes in the wooded backyard of their 19th century home in Cumberland. Hanging the laundry in the sun is just fine with Greeley.

Question of the Week
“Lounge lights are unnecessary 24/7. Lights and televisions are left on all day in the dorms. Minimizing these usages would reduce power consumption.”
“Keep appliances off when you’re not using them and turn off computers at night. Shut off bathroom lights when no on is in there.

Exchanging it Up
Have you ever been an exchange student before? No? Well, you’ve missed a lot! Being an exchange student was and still is the most beautiful aspect of my life. I’m lucky enough to experience my second year of exchange in the United States of America.
My name is Nino Kemoklidze and I’m an international student from Georgia.

Letter from the Editor
Last week I learned a difficult lesson. Actually in the past few weeks I’ve learned many lessons, most of them somewhat painful and embarrassing. The most prominent however, is one that involved others’ lives, reputations and relationships.
I ran an editorial chastising the president for reprimanding a student who disagreed with the logo change.
Local attacks prompt USM safety alerts
In response to a rash of sexual assaults in the area last week, USM officials have issued two safety alerts to the USM community. According to university officials the safety alerts, known as “timely notices,” were released to make students aware of threats to their safety and provide them with information they need to stay safe.
Health Beat: Taking your health issues to college
An exciting time this is, living away from your family home for the first time, meeting new friends, having the chance to try out a new activity, even taking a class you really love! For the first time there are no parents to negotiate where you’re going and what time you should be home, to monitor whether you awaken in time to get to your first class, or to comment on the lack of leafy greens on your plate.

To my adoring fans:
I regret to inform you about the terrible meal I was served on Wednesday night. You see, I took a little trip down to the wharf to grab up some eats, but my indecision was killing me and I couldn’t choose between The Dry Dock and J’s Oyster.

By the end of the l9th century, the burning of coal and oil had become the source of energy that would create our modern industrial society. But towards the end of the 20th century there were increasing concerns about the soot, carbon dioxide and other negative effects produced by these fossil fuels.

Health Beat
No Time to Get the Flu. . .
Influenza is a contagious disease caused by a virus that attacks your throat, nose and lungs. It is vaccine-preventable and causes death for 36,000 Americans each year. Compared to an estimated 600 SARS deaths worldwide, it’s clear that influenza is much more dangerous than just a fever, muscle aches and chills.

POLICE JURISDICTION
To the Editor:
USM Police “did not have the authority to do police work outside of Portland Hall.”
I find this amazing. If someone was murdered outside on public property ANYONE CAN MAKE A CITIZENS ARREST.
I feel USM police are tragically failing us.
Source of student’s injuries a mystery
Seth Therrien doesn’t know exactly how he got a broken nose, jaw and a concussion on the evening of Sept. 13. His first clear memory is of waking up a hospital bed in the Maine Medical Center the next morning. All anyone knows for sure is that Therrien was found bleeding in one of the bathrooms on the 7th floor of Dickey hall, at the end of a trail of blood that started with a large pool on the landing between the 7th and 8th floors.

Shamrocks and shenanigans
Ever since I befriended an Irish girl named Mara, I have wanted to see Ireland. “My family is from Galway,” she would tell me. “It is such a beautiful city. The countryside is amazing, the people are so nice, you have to go there.” Her praise of the country was backed by others’ accounts of Ireland’s beauty and charm.
