Internationally known author to lecture on academic equality

In Little East Conference action last Wednesday, at The University of Southern Maine’s Hill Gymnasium, the women’s volleyball team challenged the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (UMD) to a competition that took a full five sets to decide. USM took the final set, taking the 3-2 win.
Treachery, murder and magical mayhem abound in Student Performing Artists’ production of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” opening on Thursday, October 23, just in time for Halloween. From witches and vengeful ghosts to murder plots and live swordplay, “Macbeth” seems like a perfect show for the Halloween season.
Last week The Maine Campus (UMaine Orono’s newspaper) reported that their student senate created a resolution which was “a thinly veiled attempt to affect the content of The Maine Campus.” The resolution would’ve required The Maine Campus to hire a faculty adviser, which they haven’t had for three years.
Have you ever wondered what it is like to beat a Guinness World Record of 23, 727 jack-o-lanterns lit at once? The record is held by Keene, NH and this Saturday the Life is Good Pumpkin Festival will attempt to break the record. The USM Student Nurse Organization (SNO) is a sponsor of this event and has reserved space for pumpkin carving in Woodbury Campus Center in Portland from 9 a.

Tony Dungy, the coach of the undefeated Indianapolis Colts, has been having a disturbing recurring dream this week. In the dream, Warren Sapp unexpectedly bursts out of Dungy’s birthday cake and proceeds to smear icing all over Peyton Manning’s face and uniform.

Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring and The edge of the Sea, spent summers in Southport, Maine from 1951 until 1963. A tidal salt pond in nearby New Harbor was a cherished spot. Thanks to the Maine Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, which Rachel helped found, this beautiful tide pool is now part of the Rachel Carson Salt Pond Preserve and is open to the public.
Dimitra Toothaker, a lively little woman with bright blue eyes, asks one of the students in her Modern Greek class to read a paragraph out of the textbook. Somehow, he renders meaning from the alien script, slowly translating sentence after sentence.
“Neh,” Toothaker says, which is “yes” in Greek.

There was a report of harassment and possible stalking on the Gorham campus. The case is under investigation.
Sept. 26
Michael McQuade, 19, of Gorham, was issued a summons to court by USM for criminal mischief. He has been charged with setting off a fire extinguisher in Philippi Hall.

You can’t miss Mr. Bagel! Even if you’re flying down Forest Ave., your eyes will certainly be drawn to the giant plywood bagel guy on their building. A little forewarning, he’s serving up one seriously large-and-in-charge bagel, which he seems pretty happy about; what can I say, pal? The smile on his face is infectious; saddle up partner.
As I sit before my computer and write my “Staffer Speaks” column, many thoughts are going through my head. I could write about George Bush and his faults as President, but I won’t.
I could write about the farce that we know as the California recall and the race for Governor.
Interim Dean Luiza Deprez has asked the Communication and Media Studies (MES) programs to evaluate their majors and consider merging. The Geosciences and Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) programs are also being targeted for a merger. With over $450,000 cut last spring from the academic affairs budget and $200,000 of it from CAS colleges within the University have had to make concessions to meet shrinking budgets The faculty of these programs are in the initial stages of brainstorming what these mergers could look like.
The 2003 Jewish High Holiday season will pass unnoticed by the vast majority of USM students. The High Holidays began on September 26th and will end on October 6th; it is a time for Jews to reaffirm their faith and bond with their religious community.

WMPG will have their eighth annual CD and record sale at USM’s Sullivan Gym on October 11. Admission is one dollar and thousands of CD’s, DVD’s, books and music memorabilia will be available at greatly reduced prices.
Intellectual property
To the Editor:
It was with some dismay that I read the 29 SEP 03 Question of the Week responses. I am shocked that students at USM would be so cavalier about intellectual property. Taking someone else’s music, without permission, is no different than going into a store and taking merchandise off of the shelf or entering another’s home and taking the stereo.
Maine’s entry to the Miss America Pageant was a USM student this year. Elizabeth Edgecomb, a 20-year-old music major won a talent award for her passionate rendition of Chopin’s “Fantasie Impromptu,” but did not advance to the semi-finals. Edgecomb has been playing piano for 17 years.
If the economy weren’t in such poor shape right now (no matter how many times Bush’s cabinet tells you that it isn’t) I’d bet good money that there are significantly more Americans who can name the first and second placers from the first two seasons of “American Idol” than could name that same number (two, for those not paying attention) of politicians declaring their candidacy for president in next year’s election.
