USM’s art and literature journal Words & Images celebrated the release of their 2004 issue at the Portland Regency Hotel in Old Port last Friday.
A night for Phil
Students and Faculty gathered at the Woodbury Campus Center on Monday night to mourn the passing of Phil Hersey, technical director of WMPG for over ten years. The event was also meant as a celebration of his life and included a slide show, an open mike for thoughts and memories about Hersey, and performances by bands that had worked with Hersey at WMPG in the past.

Failures have been a popular topic in the 9/11 hearings. CIA Director George J. Tenet has confessed to multiple failures and shortcomings within the intelligence communities in the months leading up to September 11. He simultaneously defended the CIA, saying it did all it could under the given restrictions.

Portland campus neighborhood voices opinion on new garage
Neighborhoods surrounding the USM campus in Portland had strong feelings when they heard about USM’s plan to build a 1,150-space garage on campus. They knew something needed to be done about the parking situation, but they feared the garage would leave surrounding neighbors staring at a big, ugly chunk of cement.
Veterans lead successful softball season
The University of Southern Maine Women’s softball team is off to an excellent start this spring under the leadership of USM alum Coach Bonnie Brown-Denico, who collected her 200th career victory on March 20. As of press time the Lady Huskies stood at 13-3, and their coach has high hopes for her team.

USM has more support than you might think
Many of the stories reported by THE FREE PRESS are critical of the University administration, its decisions and policies. As a reporter for the paper, I’ve talked to a lot of students and come away with one underlying impression: many students don’t think University officials are looking out for them or have their best interests in mind.
Upgrades needed to support wireless service
Before wireless installation is complete on both campuses, the University will have to upgrade some of its older equipment. Though some buildings are already equipped with the necessary technology to support wireless connections, older buildings require some revamping before access points can be installed.
