USM poets steal the scene at Geno’s
The first time I went to Geno’s–the basement bar next to Margarita’s, on Brown Street in Portland–it was about a year ago and the place was packed. I’d been around poets before, of course, but I’d never been around this breed of poets. Mad poets. Poets with wild hair and wilder eyes, poets with rhythm, poets with wit, poets with questionable hygiene, poets whose words were inspired by voices the rest of us didn’t hear.
Lifestyle
rling and suede encased feet in the store’s mirror. I hadn’t meant to try them on. I had in fact entered the store in search of my yearly winter boot: black, leather and with a thin heel, the heel and toe shape differing slightly depending on the season. Perhaps not a practical shoe choice for Maine’s snowy winters, but it had worked just fine for the last three years and I didn’t see any reason to change now.
Question of the Week
How did you spend Martin Luther King Jr. Day? Audrey Caires Freshman “I worked on MLK Jr. Day.” Samantha Parker Junior “Moved into Portland Hall!” Travis Cote Senior “I finished moving into my apartment.” Jon Riley Freshman “Slept, worked, ate.” Charlie Fitts Geology Professor “Worked preparing for classes.

How long have you been working on your degree?
Since 1993.
Over the years, what have you noticed about USM that you like?
FootPrint
On my way to class last week, I suddenly became aware of a nearby smoker. I hadn’t seen a cigarette or heard the rasp of a lighter. Rather, I had inhaled a puff of their smoke. This air had quite naturally traveled in and out of their lungs and then in and out of mine.
Letter From the Editor
I was doing schoolwork at my desk. I had just finished eating three off my famous Bronson Burritos: monstrous bean-filled tortillas each, complete with sour cream, salsa and shredded cheese. I leaned forward in my chair to grab a book I’d left on the floor, and froze.
From the mountains
It was shortly after midnight. My phone wasn’t working, the power was out and my mountaineering career was rapidly evaporating.
Have you ever have one of those days when nothing seems to work out the way you planned?
My day had started well. I had gone rock climbing on Cathedral Ledge in North Conway, New Hampshire.
Consultants comb USM for signs of research capability
Have you ever wondered what happens inside the new science building on the Portland campus? According to Provost Joseph Wood, highly competitive research happens and he intends to make sure people hear about it. Earlier this month, Wood issued a memo to the University community regarding a team of external research consultants he has brought in to determine USM’s “institutional capacity for research, scholarship and creative activity.
Toothaker continues Green Party success in Portland
It wasn’t the Washington State gubernatorial controversy and it wasn’t a Boxer Rebellion in Ohio. For USM political science major Jason Toothaker, the race for a seat on the Portland School Board came down to the closest possible margin: one vote. Maine Superior Court Justice Thomas Warren ruled on December 4 that Green Party candidate Toothaker won the race against Julia Finn, a Democrat, 3,219 votes to 3,218.
New space for Gorham childcare?
Since 2002, USM’s child care has been scrutinized. While they consistently received accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children, in May 2002 the Classified Staff Senate found both the Portland and Gorham facilities “inadequate.
Demosthenes’ Corner
Demosthenes (di-‘m?s-th&-“nEz): 384-322 B.C. Demosthenes’ greatest oration is entitled “On the Crown.” He delivered it in 330 BC. It was a review and justification of his public life and began with the words “I told you so, I told you so.” USM has a variety of illustrious speakers coming here every week.
Campus Crime
Jan. 21 USM police found a bong in Gorham. Jan. 22 USM police caught minors with alcohol while on a routine walk through of Yankee Clipper in Portland Hall. Unknown persons defecated in a urinal in the fourth floor men’s room of Anderson Hall. Somebody backed into a police cruiser on the Gorham Campus.
In Brief
People going nowhere in parking garage
A 30 minute wait at the exit of the parking garage caused prompted complaints to be posted on the USM information list serve on Thursday, January 27. The crux of the complaints stemmed not from the wait, but the alleged poor customer service of the parking garage employees.
LifeStyle
I am a reformed junkie. A spa junkie, that is. The term “spa junkie” refers to the women and sometimes men who are nearly addicted to spas and will frequent them as much as humanly (or monetarily) possible. And I, admittedly, was one of them.
I received my first professional massage at age 9 because of a back problem.

Student Directed “Lysistrata” takes the USM Main Stage
It’s Thursday night, about six hours after my deadline for this article. In an overheated classroom in Bailey Hall on the Gorham campus, I’m watching a group of actors find ways to externalize their psyches on cue. This means that at any given moment, said actors may be making like airplanes, elephants, or horny old men.
USM to hire a poet
The Department of English is hiring a new poet. To that end, they are bringing to campus two candidates within the next two weeks.
The first was be Brian Henry, editor of “Verse”, author (most recently) of “Astronaut”, and former Director of Creative Writing at the University of Georgia.
Two USM theater productions to travel to regional festival
This year, USM has not one but count ’em, two shows traveling to the Kennedy Center American College Theater Regional Festival. “The Laramie Project” and “November/December” have been chosen as two out of only six productions to compete in the Region 1 division of the annual festival, which includes colleges from throughout the New England states.

Peyton’s poor performance pleases Pats
As a sports fan, there’s nothing more perversely gratifying than when a fraud is exposed. Kobe is charged with rape. Eugene Robinson gets arrested for soliciting a prostitute on the night before the Super Bowl, shortly after receiving the Bart Starr award for high moral character.
