There’s too much boring music these days. The radio is gushing over-churned unoriginal pop music. Most of the “real” rock and rollers seem too unsatisfied and tortured to get along with each other long enough to keep a band together for more than a few albums.
PEB kicks off year with exciting open mic
The Portland Events Board put on an Open Mic Night in the Woodbury Campus Center in Portland last Wednesday. While only about 30 people showed up, the show was bigger than the PEB’s open mic last year. Christine Bullard, the chair of the PEB, considered it to be a huge success.

Poem – More Days
It so happens that I am sick of being a man.
Of rising at the same time, showering
In the same way, of living life
Like there is a tomorrow.
It is that I’m tired of having the same route
Into town, of passing the same hobo asking
For the same quarter to buy the same
Cheap beer sold down at City Beverage.
Jolie Holland rocks Space Gallery
Several hundred people packed Space Gallery in Portland last Thursday night for a concert by the critically acclaimed folk artist Jolie Holland of the band The Be Good Tanyas. Singer-songwriter Matt Bauer opened.
The venue was fairly packed by the time Bauer, a fairly imposing man with a very soft voice, began his set of slow songs full of nature imagery.

JN: What is the best moment you have had as an athlete here at USM?
AB: I’ve had a lot of really great moments as an athlete here at USM, but I would really like to say thanks to my coach and teammates for allowing me to have another great year.
Competitive insight: USM Sailing
Casco Bay might seem to most an attraction best enjoyed from the dry, paved confines of the East End walking path, but for a few hardy Huskies, the frigid waters off Portland are as much of a battleground today as they were during the Revolutionary War.
USM Field Hockey powers past Farmington; Huskies fend off Western Connecticut
The Southern Maine field hockey team regrouped after last Saturday’s heartbreaking loss to Framingham State, and fought hard in a well-deserved 2-1 victory over the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers at Paula D. Hodgdon Field in Gorham on Wednesday.
The matchup proved the two teams were equally solid after a scoreless 42 minutes, until USM senior forward India Lowe (Gloucester, MA) struck first with her second goal of the season.

The Allagash Wilderness Waterway
Maine is home to many natural wonders such as our endless rocky coastline, beautiful beaches, pristine national parks, a rigorous stretch of the Appalachian Trail leading to its finish line of Mount Katahdin and so many more. However, many people would agree that there are actually two Maines.
No shortage of suggestions for USM restructuring
The administration is looking to students to help change the way USM is run.
On June 11, the school released the final draft of the Strategic Plan – a manifesto outlining eight goals to sustain the school through a period of economic uncertainty.
The plan, which was penned by faculty, students, administrators and members of the general public, went through three drafts before it was released June 11.
Huskies Volleyball back in action
Budget cuts are a rising issue in high schools and colleges all over the country. Due to the economic draught that has taken over, schools are forced to cut programs with a good majority of them being sports. USM has even had to deal with this issue and has had to drop sports programs because of the increase of costs in transportation, uniforms, facilities, etc.
Moving on…
The fenced-off play area on the Portland campus that used to be filled with children laughing and playing is now empty and quiet. All that remains is a covered sandbox, an old play house, and blank spot where the swingset used to be.
Last February, to balance last year’s state curtailment of $2.
UNE downs Huskies in physical matchup
Many believe that soccer is more of a finesse game than anything. In contrast, the sport can also be known as a very physical bout and that is exactly what was showcased in Wednesday afternoon’s non-conference women’s soccer matchup on the USM Soccer Field.

Guzman starts off strong
Campaign promises, lofty goals, finding the time to talk with your constituency, these are things that can easily slip away from a Student Body President once the crush of classes, meetings, and social functions start to kick in with the start of the semester.
Huskies Field Hockey dominate in win over Gordon
The USM Huskies dominated the Gordon College Fighting Scots with a lopsided score of 6-0 in what was non-conference field hockey action at Paula D. Hodgdon field in Gorham this past Thursday.
The Huskies began their intense offensive attack early on; penetrating deep into the Gordon zone until senior forward Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, ME) managed to deflect a shot from sophomore forward Whitney McDaniel (Livermore, ME) into the goal just four and a half minutes into the game to make the score 1-0.
Portland, a college town?
Sound a little far-fetched? I know it did to me when the editor at my summer internship pitched this story idea to me three weeks ago.
Sure Portland has a world-class bar scene, a vibrant music community, and more burrito joints than you can shake a sustainably-harvested stick at, but it hardly has that Columbus, Boston, or Gainesville vibe that people normally associate with a college town.
The F Word–A Feminist Perspective
In countries across the globe, and even in various states, women have the legal right to go topless. But just because women can, doesn’t mean women do. There is a strong sort of taboo against the naked chest of a woman being visible in public. Here in Maine women can go topless, but do we? I’ve lived in Maine for ten years, I’ve been to multiple beaches, countless times, and I have yet to see even one topless woman in public.
Portland on a Whim
It’s Thursday night. You’re old enough to drink and young enough not to have to worry about trucking off to the office at 9a.m. Friday morning. The only problem is that that rent check you just wrote for your new apartment just cleared out whatever was left in your bank account, and you’ve got almost no money to spend.

JN: What was the reason you came to USM? Was it more because of the athletics, or was it for the academics?
DK: Well I went to UMaine in Orono my freshman year and went there for the academics. I walked on to the men’s soccer team there. Then, after losing every game my freshman year, I realized I just wanted to play and have fun.
