With all the events happening on the USM-Gorham campus, there is plenty to do to keep students busy. From intramural sports, to outdoor concerts in front of Corthell Hall, to Thirsty Thursday in the Brooks Student center, USM provides students with plenty of activities to get them out, meet new students, and just have a good time.
Competitive Insight
Sullivan Gym serves as a place for students (mostly commuters) to get a solid free weight workout, a nice run in, or get a pick-up game of basketball going. However, many students don’t realize the other activities they can be involved in at the Portland campus gym, and one of these activities is the USM Blade Society.
Portland restaurant workers have ROC on their side
For the average college student in Portland, working in a restaurant is either a rite of passage into the working world, or a viable career choice, especially given the plethora of restaurants, diners and bars in what Bon Appetit recently dubbed America’s Foodiest Town.
USM professor opens dance center
“I believe in freeing your inner spirit, following your passion and going in the direction of your dreams,” said USM dance professor Maria Tzianabos. This month, Tzianabos did just that by opening a new studio in South Portland called the Terpiscore Dance Center.
Voters Guide: TABOR II
Among the controversial referendum questions Maine voters will consider on Nov. 3 is Question 4: “An Act to Provide Tax Relief.” The bill, also known as TABOR II, or the Tax Payer’s Bill of Rights, is a tax-cap that would limit state and local spending.
Supporters of TABOR say it puts the power of appropriation back into the hands of taxpayers.
Nerd Alert: Windows platforms discounted for students
After Microsoft’s blunder with the clunky release of Windows Vista in 2007, the software giant is ready to win back one of its most important demographics, college students. On September 17, Microsoft launched a special promotional deal for students, selling Windows 7, Microsoft’s brand new operating system (OS), in two editions: Home Premium ($99 retail price) and Professional ($199 retail price) for the discounted price of $30 at http://www.
From the Police Files
PORTLAND — A student was summoned for leaving the scene of an accident on Sept. 17 at around 6:30 p.m. after striking another student’s blue 2006 two-door Chevrolet with her Hyundai in the parking garage on the Portland campus. Police wouldn’t release the name of the student, but identified her as a 21-year-old female.
Letter from the Editor
I love my bicycle.
Maybe love is a strong word. I mean, I love sleeping in, bacon, and disc golf, but I feel really, really strongly for my bicycle.
I would drag that sucker into bed with me if I wasn’t so sure that it would leave my sheets looking like a mechanic’s shop rag, and besides, the thing has no idea how to share the covers.
The F Word: A Feminist Perspective
On Sunday, Sept 20, USM had a visit from Sherry Wolf, a socialist, gay rights activist, and author of Sexuality and Socialism. On the seventh floor of the Glickman Library, Wolf came to talk about her book, and about roots of LGBT discrimination.
Letters to the Editor
I used to live in Maine and frequented Popham Beach, topless. I wanted to start my topless journey to the beach from the parking lot but I was concerned other beach goers would freak so I would wait until I found a section where there were few people and then off came the uncomfortable top.
Sun shines brightly on USM band concert
Saturday came very close to being a perfect day for the USM student concert band performance on the front steps of Corthell Hall in Gorham. You could smell the good, cheap barbecue all the way from Upton-Hastings. The crowd was comprised mostly of local families with small children, but there were a handful of student enjoying the sunshine as well.
Get in the groove at Woodbury
The sweet harmonies of USM student jazz musicians Peter Eberhardt and Emmett Harrity made lunch in the Woodbury Campus Center classier than usual last Tuesday. The show was the first installment of Jazz Tuesdays, a series of monthly concerts in the campus center being organized by the Portland Events Board in conjunction with the Jazz Studies Program.
New to DVD: Observe and Report
Warning: viewing this movie on your home entertainment center may cause your fist to fly right through that lovely flat screen television!
“Observe and Report” presents the story of the mall security guards who patrol the aisles of the Forest Ridge Mall. The main character, Ronnie Barndhart (Seth Rogan), is so pitiful, delusional and egotistical that the comedic value in the character is lost.
Husky Highlights
The USM field hockey team came into Mansfield, CT prepared as they rolled to a 7-2 win over Eastern Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference match-up on Saturday.
The Huskies were led by sophomore forward Whitney McDaniel (Livermore, ME), freshman forward Bethany Schleh (Gorham, ME), and freshman forward Kailey Bubier (Auburn, ME) who each tallied two goals in the game.
Search for a better bean
I’ve been looking for a good cup of joe since I started at USM last month. So I did some research, drank a lot of coffee and decided on a few favorites:
The Husky Hideaway in the Student Center is the best place to go for coffee on the Gorham campus. When you’ve got the time to wait, their Pura Vida coffee comes in a variety of flavors and is a bold and rich way to refuel your brain.
Women’s Tennis blanks Pine Manor
The USM women’s tennis team regrouped after a three-match losing streak as they scored a perfect nine points, routing Pine Manor 9-0 in a non-conference match at the Gorham High school courts on Wednesday.
Sophomore Danielle Ward (Lansing, MI) led the Huskies in a match that highlighted superior play from all players on this year’s squad.
Johnson powers Huskies by Terriers
Nick Johnson is not one to hold back. He’s a player that brings energy and up-tempo play to a Huskies men’s soccer team who lost seven players to graduation last season. Johnson brought this type of play to the field on Tuesday as he helped the Huskies topple the Thomas College Terriers 5-0 in a non-conference men’s soccer match in Gorham.
Take A Hike
You don’t have to be Grizzly Adams or Bear Grylls to enjoy the wilderness, so strap on some boots, dress in layers, and enjoy our profile of three of Maine’s best hiking destinations.
While the warmer months slow slip away from us, the hiking season is in full swing.
Golf thrives in State Championship
The USM golf team matched up against the best college golf teams in the state this past Saturday in the Maine State Championship hosted by Thomas College at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro, ME. The Huskies proved their reputation as one of the top teams in the Pine Tree state as they notched a second place finish in the 11-team competition, tying their best finish thus far in the 2009 season.
Chancellor’s report draws criticism
A report outlining sweeping changes to the structure of the University of Maine System sets unrealistic expectations of enrollment for USM, says the president of USM and the chair of the Faculty Senate.
The University of Maine System and the Future of Maine, the final report in a series under UMS Chancellor Richard Pattenaude’s New Challenges, New Directions Initiative, is the culmination of three reports penned this year by three task forces composed of faculty, staff, administration and members of the general public.
Muskie professor weighs in on health care
There are a lot of rumors and half-truths circulating about health care reform.
The media is awash with talking heads eager to impart their opinions on President Obama’s plan, often taking a hysterical tone to try to turn heads in what is quickly turning into a shouting match rooted in the opposing ideologies of America’s two-party system.
Local business seeks to bring Hollywood to Maine
A warehouse and office complex at 235 Presumpscot Street may finally bring the film industry to Maine. The Maine Studios, a locally-owned movie studio, is hoping to bring in big budget movie projects and attract local, regional and national talent.

For the student body, I would like to make a difference in the university and effectively and proactively research issues and try to remedy them.
Getting the most out of Google
Over the summer USM switched it’s e-mail service over to Google. Many students noticed the switch and are using the power of Google to manage their USM mail. However, the change also added new features that many students may not be familiar with. Every student can now manage their calendars, contacts, and documents in addition to their USM mail.
