The St. Joseph’s College Monks scored four unanswered goals to rally past the USM women’s soccer team 4-1 in a non-conference game played at Windham High School last Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless 31 minutes, USM freshman forward Catherine Wise (Cape Elizabeth) put the Huskies on the board after she took a pass from junior midfielder Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston) to score her fifth goal of the season.
The USM cross-country teams continued to be a dominating force in Division III cross country, as they participated in the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championship in Keene, New Hampshire on Saturday. The men’s team swept both championships, and the women’s placed second.

A live televised debate on same-sex marriage drew 500 people to the Hannaford Lecture Hall Wednesday evening.
The University of Maine System may have to cut more than $15 million from its budget over the next two years.
Maine has always done a good job at highlighting abundant natural resources. It’s not hard to sell people on the buttery merits of a freshly steamed lobster — and just try to keep those leaf-peepers from pouring across the border to get a glimpse of our fall colors — but Portland’s most abundant resource lacks the same postcard appeal.
The University recently granted permission to the police department to fill three vacant patrol officer positions despite a school-wide hiring freeze that has been in effect since 2007.
According to Craig Hutchinson, vice president of Student and University Life, a committee granted the request to fill the positions because of concerns of safety on campus.
More students are taking advantage of Federal Work Study money than they have in previous years, according to the financial aid office.
“What we’re seeing is that students this year are working more hours, earning more money than the same population same time last year,” said Keith Dubois, director of the financial aid office.
On Nov. 3, Maine voters will be asked to vote on proposed changes to the state’s marijuana laws.
If Question 5 passes, it would be legal for nonprofit dispensaries to grow and sell marijuana to patients with prescriptions. The dispensaries would be regulated by the Department of Health and Human Services.
How long have you been teaching overall? at USM?
Since 1995 at USM. For sixteen years before that I was on the faculty in economics at William & Mary. I got tired of Virginia, and my wife and I (Susan Feiner, also a USM professor) were happy to take advantage of the offer to come back to New England at USM.
USM students are the nurses, programmers, politicians and environmental activists of the future.
But while struggling to pay for their 15-credit semesters though, they are the wait-staff, work study students, and minimum wage slaves of today.
Oh yeah, and drug dealers, can’t forget those drug dealers.
USM students pay various fees for “services” provided by the college. Some of these fees, included in all student bills, goes to the “transportation” services of the school. Services like a shuttle to Gorham, so useful to us with our own vehicle or with no classes EVER in Gorham.
The military is not a subject I would particularly like to tackle. There are all these branches, all these rules and regulations, and basically a lot of things I have no idea about. I mean, I guess I have ideas. but there are some things one just can’t totally get unless one has had some firsthand experience.
A production of two of Anton Chekhov’s one-act plays, “The Bear” and “The Proposal,” opened last Thursday to a packed audience in Russell Hall in Gorham.

This past Tuesday, two USM connected bands, Marie Stella and the Rattlesnakes, opened for the New Jersey based punk band Screaming Females at Space Gallery in Portland.
Marie Stella kicked off the show with a new song titled “Lonely is Better,” which showed off USM alumna Sydney Bourke’s sweet soprano vocals, powerful bass-playing abilities and growing songwriting talent.
Six Afro-Cuban jazz musicians from around the world will be coming to USM for five days of live performances and workshops starting next Thursday. The musicians are part of a group called Un Mondo, which translates as “One World,” in an event hosted by the School of Music and the Cultural Affairs Committee.
It’s a First Friday Artwalk in Portland, and a busy crowd of tourists and students are exploring the chic galleries along Congress St. As they approach the intersection with High St., they feel the warmth of a soulful voice and an acoustic guitar wafting through the air.
A large crowd packed into the gallery of the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies on Congress St. last Thursday for the opening of an exhibit of poetry by women incarcerated in the Maine state correctional system. The poems are the result of a year of creative writing workshops conducted by Family Crisis Services, a Maine-based non-profit that works with victims of domestic violence.
The University of Southern Maine women’s cross-country continued their success in 2009 as they took a second place finish in the Pop Crowell Invitational at Gordon College on Saturday. The Huskies placed five runners in the top 30 at the 27-team competition, marking it as one of their best performances of the year.
Women’s soccer takes care of UMass Dartmouth
In a game that looked destined for overtime, the University of Southern Maine and UMass Dartmouth women’s’ soccer teams combined for three goals in the closing minutes, turning a 1-1 tie into a 3-2 USM victory.
The USM field hockey team may have a young team, but they play like an experienced group, as evidence showed in their recent 2-0 win over the Worcester State Lancers in a non-conference match-up at Paula D. Hodgdon Field in Gorham last Wednesday.
Great play from USM freshmen coupled with knowledgeable veteran effort served as the keys to the Huskies sixth win of the season.
The cheerleading program at USM is in rebuilding mode and- despite last year’s success at the Division II National tournament in Daytona- it is clear that the squad is still flying under the radar, constantly having to answer the repetitive question: USM has a cheerleading team?
Ironically it’s the lack of recognition that keeps the Husky cheering squad motivated.
