At USM the Athletics Department takes great pride in the players and teams that represent the institution on and off the field. There are instances though when student-athletes struggle to pay for their education, and are forced to leave school and their teams in search of ways to become financially stable.

FP: Why did you choose to come to USM? Was it the academics or the cross-country and track and field programs?

EG: I chose USM for a mix of both. Academically, USM was well-known for its Nursing and Health Science Programs which were the majors I was deciding between.

The USM baseball team was back in action this weekend as they took on St. Joseph’s University-Long Island, beating them 8-3 in both games of a doubleheader in their home opener at the USM Baseball Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies were scheduled to travel to New York this weekend to play in the SUNY-Farmingdale Tournament after playing Old Westbury and Albertus Magnus in Long Island last weekend, but due to bad weather conditions the tournament was cancelled, and SJU-LI traveled to Gorham for what is considered to be one of the earliest home openers since the USM Baseball Stadium was built.

From the time the Division I men’s basketball season begins in late October to the end of the regular season in early March, it’s all part of brewing the madness. March Madness that is.

March is upon us again and with that comes the NCAA March Madness Men’s College Basketball Tournament, one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year.

The University of New England poured in 13 tallies as the Nor’easters defeated USM in the Huskies home opener 13-10 at Memorial Field on the grounds of Deering High School on Friday night.

In What panned out to be a back and forth contest, UNE took advantage of scoring opportunities and used a five-goal effort from stand-out freshman Tyler Thomas to hand USM their second straight loss.

USM Assistant Director for Athletics Meredith Bickford was recently presented with the Emerging Athletic Administrator Award at the NCAA National Convention. Bickford, a former USM Student-Athlete, serves as an assistant athletic director at USM for Student-Development and is the department’s senior woman administrator.

Six years ago when the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years, the team didn’t have any flashy, over-paid players who cared only about themselves. They had a group of hard-nosed guys who would crash through a wall to make a catch, or lay down a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the ninth; as long as it was going to help their team a win.

FP: What is your major?

AD: I am an Athletic Training major.

FP: What has your experience been like in your three years here at USM?

AD: I’d describe my experience here at USM as rewarding. The Athletic Training major is a difficult one, especially because of the 150 clinical hours we are required to do each semester.

The USM men’s indoor track and field team finished second out of the 66 teams competing in the Eastern College Athletic Conference’s Division III Championship which was held at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. on Friday and Saturday.

Southern Maine was locked in at fourth place after the first day of the two-day meet.

The USM baseball team was back in action this weekend after an outstanding 2009 season that saw the Huskies go to the Division III New England Regional Tournament for the second consecutive year. USM opened their 2010 season with a 7-3 win over Old Westbury on Saturday, and a 15-4 win over Albertus Magnus at the Baseball Heaven Complex in Yaphank, N.

The USM women’s basketball team is known for their great program and it showed this year as they played in NCAA tournament for the 16th straight season. After their last two seasons were cut short in the first round of the NCAA DIII tournament with loses to Brandeis and Emmanuel, the Huskies earned a first-round, 74-63 win against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at LeFrak Gymnasium on the campus of Amherst College on Friday.

After garnering the title as the first two national qualifiers in one season in USM wrestling history last weekend at the New England Wrestling Association Championships, senior Mike Morin (Fryeburg) and junior Matt Ulrich (Garfield, N.J.) amazed the Husky faithful once again as they both claimed All-American honors at the 2010 NCAA DIII Wrestling National Championship this past Friday and Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The USM women’s basketball team earned a spot in Little East Conference Championship game but failed to reclaim the title they won a year ago as they lost 61-46 to Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Conn. on Saturday.

The top-seeded Colonials, who won their first LEC Title since 1994, were led by junior forward Melissa Teel who led all scorers with 23 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

You could say the USM women’s indoor track and field team has dominated the Little East and Alliance Conferences in the last decade. The Huskies posted several standout performances as they went on to win their 10th straight LEC and Alliance Championships on Sat.

Skidmore Junior Alex Mykolenko scored a shorthanded goal that proved to be the game winner in an ECAC Men’s quarterfinal playoff game as they rallied past USM to earn a 6-3 victory on Saturday in Gorham.

Even a great USM student body turn out wasn’t enough to put the Huskies on top.

The USM men’s indoor track and field team captured their second consecutive Little East Conference and Alliance Championship on Feb. 6 at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham.

Six years ago Julio Santiago was working in Boston and had been out of the wrestling game for a year. Being involved in wrestling virtually his entire life, he jumped at an opportunity when USM head wrestling coach Joe Pistone called him up and offered him the assistant coaching position for the Huskies wrestling program.

This year’s baseball team is going to be very different than any other team I’ve been a part of here at USM. This year we have a very young lineup as we lost our entire starting defense besides four players. However, we have a very experienced pitching staff that has a lot of depth both in starting and relief pitching. If our young players can play up to their ability and our pitchers can pitch as we are capable, then we should have a very successful season. The LEC is a very tough conference each and every year, but I believe we will have another good year and will be competing for the conference championship in May.

The USM women’s basketball team was back in action on Saturday and did not disappoint. With the help of a 25-point performance from star freshman Curran Leighton (Dover, N.H.), the Huskies defeated UMass Dartmouth 63-56 in a hard fought Little East Conference game at Hill Gymnasium.

UMass Dartmouth had two players who scored in double figures while combining to score more than half their points, as they cruised to a 92-75 win over the USM Huskies in a Little East Conference match-up at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham Saturday.

UMD junior forward Brandon Stephens and sophomore guard Paul Rose combined to score 55 of the Corsairs 92 points to help earn their 15th overall victory of the season and their seventh LEC win.

The USM men’s indoor track and field team held off a strong Bates team Saturday night to capture the Maine State Indoor Tack and Field Collegiate Chamionships.
