Media and profs should
give Kucinich a chance

Thanks so much for your coverage of Kucinich. You covered his issues well in the space you had.
As a supporter, and mother of two USM students, I was very disheartened to see that the best your professors could offer for input was that he didn’t have a chance to win the nomination.
My roommate and I finally turned off the TV at three a.m. I couldn’t fall asleep – I lay there listening to the sounds of the night. Cars, people and doors all seemed to conspire to keep me up. Still tossing and turning about an hour later, I decided that not being able to sleep after being up for 20 hours was a problem to be solved.
Winter Session is an endangered species in the state of Maine. And it’s a species we should try and protect.
Two weeks ago President Pattenaude presented to the Faculty Senate his newest five year plan, titled “Transforming USM,” where he detailed his goals for a changing student population.
After tiring of walking the length of the long parking lot in the bitterly cold Maine winter, I decided to blaze a trail in the virgin snow, creating a shortcut to Bailey Hall, in which my class was held. Lifting my feet above the surface of the shin deep snow and then setting them down, I made a line of footprints from the edge of the lot to the adjacent, shoveled walkway.

Do you remember the day we first met? It was a dry August day in Portland, Oregon. You were humbly parked next to a green Dodge Dart with a 350, a four-barrel and a blower. I remember how you shone in the sun, and though you were only a cheap four-cylinder Toyota, I fell in love and took you home.
The grocery list of America’s problems compiled by the Democrats includes issues you would expect a true politician to hit upon such as the economy, which made me all the more sickened by the State of the Union Address wherein Bush made “steroids in sports” and “preserving the sanctity of marriage” out to be the most pressing issues facing us today.
I had been traveling for a few months when I decided to head to Sumatra, Indonesia. Indonesia was cheap, challenging and less touristy. When I arrived at the first bus station, I met five other backpackers who I ended up traveling with for a month. One of them was a Norwegian named Caroline who I really hit it off with.
Give up on Dan? Never

You’d think I’d just give up on Dan and his warped sense of reality. But once again, his blinded view of our President makes me step up to the plate and dish it back.
The State of the Union Address. Who can you trust? Howard Dean? The man is a racist who couldn’t stand up to Al Sharpton’s questioning about blacks serving public office while Dean ran Vermont.

Answer: Dean’s a wacko. He would never have a chance in the national election. Kerry had a chance in the national election, but he’s farther left than Ted Kennedy, which scares me. Edwards or Lieberman have the best chance of winning.
For years student government’s struggle with the fluctuating Student Activity Fee (SAF) has threatened the stability of the programs it funds. This year the senate is proposing a change in the system. Rather than fight to raise the fee every six to eight years they’ve proposed a yearly increase according to inflation rates called indexing.
So the other day I was visiting my father and something didn’t seem quite right. He was quiet, inattentive and short-tempered. He had bags under his eyes and his skin was unusually pale. I took him out to dinner, just the two of us, to find out what was wrong.
Last summer I took my three-year old daughter strawberry picking at a nearby farm. It was a hot day and I didn’t think she’d last more than a half hour. She did. Looking at her fruit-smeared face, the checkout people joked that they should have weighed her before and after, and added the difference to our bill.
The President gave his State of the Union Address this past Tuesday. On most fronts he had only good things to say about the state of things in America. According to Bush, America has allies, the economy and employment rates are both strong and schools are improving thanks to his No Child Left Behind Act.

I have a question/comment for the free press –
I would expect a little more out of a college newspaper when it comes to opinions from both sides of the spectrum. The question of the week regarding the Mass. same sex marriage law lists 6 opinions.

Answer: I was in Montreal and we ran into a dominatrix on the sidewalk and she got out a whip and started whipping a guy. Then she had a dry smoke container and she was whipping the guy and spraying it at the same time.
My Grandfather sat in his recliner flicking through the channels as I approached. Raising his shaggy salt-and-pepper eyebrows he cracked his thin lips into a smile. “Sit down, sit down,” he urged with his soft raspy voice as I leaned over him for a kiss.
On thanksgiving day this year, Governer Baldacci reported that he wants to cut $13 million from the state’s public education to help cover a shortfall in the state’s Medicaid program. This was reported in the last issue of the Free Press. We won’t know if the motion makes it through the legislature until we come back from break this spring.
