Life on the Edge
If I had a house in the country, I would try to respect the land. I would have an organic garden, put in a pond and maybe even get some geese. They could help “mow” a few acres around the house, which would open up the view a bit. If I got as many as 40 acres, I might even have some forest to walk through.

Parking peeves To the Editor: The parking garage has made more parking available but there are still problems that need attention. Spaces in the lot between the campus center and Masterton are at a premium. The garage seems to have replaced the Marginal Way parking lot and the bus ride as a last resort for a lot of us.
So, uh… can I buy you another drink?
Senate support soft on Activity fee
The student senators’ contribution to the biggest initiative supposedly headed by the Senate this year has been thoroughly insufficient.
Running naked through the woods
I have had a special opportunity to see deer move. Capturing their movement in words is impossible. The change from peaceful grazer, carefully clipping and chewing the outdoors, to combustive machine, bursting with power, is too perfect. Words miss the point….
Staffer rants about the U.S. economy – again
“Our capitalistic system, which cherishes greed as its primary impetus, never allowed the fruits of … [technological] advances to stray far from the owners of the technology.”

The Wedding Singer
Vietnam is a very different country compared to the rest of the SE Asia. It’s very busy, very chaotic, and very populated. I had just spent a month in Laos with my mother and it was such a culture shock to enter Vietnam. From the moment I crossed the border there was an immense difference.
Parking Boot on the Democratic Party
Now that John Edwards has dropped out of the race, it is inevitable that John Kerry will win the party nomination. While Kerry is not the only candidate left running in the election, Kucinich and Sharpton are both lost causes. By carrying on in this election they are doing lasting harm to the Democratic Party and its chances of dethroning Bush in November.

Vote yes in March to raise the Student Activity Fee
This fall an ad-hoc committee of the Student Communications Board (SCB) was formed. The SCB had recognized the rapidly dwindling value of our Student Activity Fee (SAF). It constitutes the majority of funding for our student groups. This fee is paid for and distributed by the students.
Comic Flap
The Free Press ran a comic in the last edition called Achewood that caused the community to cry out in rage. Crass language was used in reference to women and gay marriage. The responses ranged from chastising to scathing and it was clear people were offended by the comics words and tone.
Mt. Katahdin to be considered for mining?
Any proposition to mine Katahdin would likely start quite a stir. The idea strikes at the heart of what Mainers consider central to our wonderful quality of life – our access to the resources and incredible beauty provided by Maine’s natural environment. Mining Katahdin is a near-perfect analogy to the proposal to drill the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).
Full moon party
The FULL MOON PARTY is set on the tiny island of Ko Phangan on the east coast of southern Thailand. More then ten years ago, a group of tourists found that the most beautiful moon was seen from Ko Phangan. They arranged a party that formed along the stunning beach of Haad Rin to celebrate the Full Moon light.
KHAN!!! I mean… NADER!!!
Against the wishes of many whom supported him in the 2000 presidential race, Ralph Nader has decided to run again. Anti-Bush activists put up a website urging Nader to reconsider (http://www.turtlerock.com/RalphDontRun/) within days of the announcement of his candidacy.
Letters to the Editor
To the Editor:
I first met Phil Hersey when I was effectively living at the
building at 92 Bedford Street during my tenure in various editorial
capacities at The Free Press. So many people come and go but
you remember and acquaint yourself with the regulars.
Question of the week
Name: Erin Barry
Year: Senior
Major: History
Answer: I think the employees are very pleasant, but I have to say after eating ARAMARK food for four years, I think I’ve become immune to it. But it’s no coincidence that about 20 minutes after you eat, your roommates are fighting over the bathroom.

One Good Man
The phone rang and it was still dark out. I turned and looked at the clock: 6:13. I knew who it was and what she was calling for. I laid in bed unwilling to hear her voice crack. “Not yet, I’ll call her after I shower.”
After dressing I walk with reservation towards the phone.
Staff bookie bets on Kerry
It’s been a quiet, uneventful week. Very quiet, if you discount the brick that sailed through my window shortly after the conclusion of the Super Bowl. The assailant left few clues, but I imagine it was a scorned ex-lover or her male counterpart – the scorned ex-bookie.
An Asian Excursion
In May of 2002, I ventured to a place that I would bet few know the location of: Mongolia. I had just finished backpacking through the toughest part of my trip, at the time, in China. Noticing that I was so close to an untouched country, I decided to see a country that few people had experienced.
Down with Schlock and Awful
We are told to vote with our hearts. Our inner feelings are ideally there to guide us to cast our votes for the candidates whom we feel will best serve our country. In a perfect world this would be the best way to vote. In our cynical world today, however, I feel it na?ve to vote solely based upon feelings.
