USM students pay various fees for “services” provided by the college. Some of these fees, included in all student bills, goes to the “transportation” services of the school. Services like a shuttle to Gorham, so useful to us with our own vehicle or with no classes EVER in Gorham.

The F Word: A Feminist Perspective
The military is not a subject I would particularly like to tackle. There are all these branches, all these rules and regulations, and basically a lot of things I have no idea about. I mean, I guess I have ideas. but there are some things one just can’t totally get unless one has had some firsthand experience.
The lighter side of Chekhov
A production of two of Anton Chekhov’s one-act plays, “The Bear” and “The Proposal,” opened last Thursday to a packed audience in Russell Hall in Gorham.
As the audience took their seats, old-fashioned balalaika music serenaded them off to nineteenth century Russia, setting the mood perfectly.
The evolution of Jakob Battick
Jakob Battick has a half-groomed beard and wavy brown hair that hangs below his ears. He is very tall and very intelligent. He loves playing the guitar and spending time with his family. He doesn’t like playing Frisbee. He is my friend.
We met in the fall of 2007 when we lived on the same floor of Robie-Andrews Hall.
The delicious delights of “Julie & Julia”
Prepare to get hungry; this charming film will capture both your heart and your taste buds. Filled with witty humor and clips of delicious meals, “Julie & Julia” is the year’s best chick flick by far.
The film follows two different true stories. The first belongs to Julie Powell (Amy Adams).
USM bands rock Space Gallery
This past Tuesday, two USM connected bands, Marie Stella and the Rattlesnakes, opened for the New Jersey based punk band Screaming Females at Space Gallery in Portland.
Marie Stella kicked off the show with a new song titled “Lonely is Better,” which showed off USM alumna Sydney Bourke’s sweet soprano vocals, powerful bass-playing abilities and growing songwriting talent.
Let’s get ready to Rumba!

A singing comes across the sky
It’s a First Friday Artwalk in Portland, and a busy crowd of tourists and students are exploring the chic galleries along Congress St. As they approach the intersection with High St., they feel the warmth of a soulful voice and an acoustic guitar wafting through the air.
Salt Institute presents prison poetry
A large crowd packed into the gallery of the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies on Congress St. last Thursday for the opening of an exhibit of poetry by women incarcerated in the Maine state correctional system. The poems are the result of a year of creative writing workshops conducted by Family Crisis Services, a Maine-based non-profit that works with victims of domestic violence.

The Huskies placed five runners in the top 30 at the 27-team competition, marking it as one of their best performances of the year.

Field Hockey garners shutout over Worcester State
The USM field hockey team may have a young team, but they play like an experienced group, as evidence showed in their recent 2-0 win over the Worcester State Lancers in a non-conference match-up at Paula D. Hodgdon Field in Gorham last Wednesday.
Great play from USM freshmen coupled with knowledgeable veteran effort served as the keys to the Huskies sixth win of the season.
The pep of Husky Nation
The cheerleading program at USM is in rebuilding mode and- despite last year’s success at the Division II National tournament in Daytona- it is clear that the squad is still flying under the radar, constantly having to answer the repetitive question: USM has a cheerleading team?
Ironically it’s the lack of recognition that keeps the Husky cheering squad motivated.
A whole new outlook on working out
With all the events happening on the USM-Gorham campus, there is plenty to do to keep students busy. From intramural sports, to outdoor concerts in front of Corthell Hall, to Thirsty Thursday in the Brooks Student center, USM provides students with plenty of activities to get them out, meet new students, and just have a good time.
Competitive Insight
Sullivan Gym serves as a place for students (mostly commuters) to get a solid free weight workout, a nice run in, or get a pick-up game of basketball going. However, many students don’t realize the other activities they can be involved in at the Portland campus gym, and one of these activities is the USM Blade Society.
Portland restaurant workers have ROC on their side
For the average college student in Portland, working in a restaurant is either a rite of passage into the working world, or a viable career choice, especially given the plethora of restaurants, diners and bars in what Bon Appetit recently dubbed America’s Foodiest Town.

Voters Guide: TABOR II
Among the controversial referendum questions Maine voters will consider on Nov. 3 is Question 4: “An Act to Provide Tax Relief.” The bill, also known as TABOR II, or the Tax Payer’s Bill of Rights, is a tax-cap that would limit state and local spending.
Supporters of TABOR say it puts the power of appropriation back into the hands of taxpayers.

From the Police Files
PORTLAND — A student was summoned for leaving the scene of an accident on Sept. 17 at around 6:30 p.m. after striking another student’s blue 2006 two-door Chevrolet with her Hyundai in the parking garage on the Portland campus. Police wouldn’t release the name of the student, but identified her as a 21-year-old female.

I love my bicycle.
Maybe love is a strong word. I mean, I love sleeping in, bacon, and disc golf, but I feel really, really strongly for my bicycle.
I would drag that sucker into bed with me if I wasn’t so sure that it would leave my sheets looking like a mechanic’s shop rag, and besides, the thing has no idea how to share the covers.
The F Word: A Feminist Perspective
On Sunday, Sept 20, USM had a visit from Sherry Wolf, a socialist, gay rights activist, and author of Sexuality and Socialism. On the seventh floor of the Glickman Library, Wolf came to talk about her book, and about roots of LGBT discrimination.

I used to live in Maine and frequented Popham Beach, topless. I wanted to start my topless journey to the beach from the parking lot but I was concerned other beach goers would freak so I would wait until I found a section where there were few people and then off came the uncomfortable top.
Sun shines brightly on USM band concert
Saturday came very close to being a perfect day for the USM student concert band performance on the front steps of Corthell Hall in Gorham. You could smell the good, cheap barbecue all the way from Upton-Hastings. The crowd was comprised mostly of local families with small children, but there were a handful of student enjoying the sunshine as well.
