In reply to the article of Campus SECURITY Examined and the student comments within, I would like to know how an institution that is for higher education selects students who are so ignorant in their choice of words.
In regards to the comment that positive and negative attitudes help determine or are even a factor if a person is to going to be raped I think is ludicrous.

I was more than a little shocked last week to read in The Free Press that, “If you walk around campus.thinking that you are going to get raped, then you probably will. But if you walk around with a positive attitude and don’t think you are going to get raped, you probably won’t.

Strongly opposed to the price hike for parking at USM in the upcoming years, I’ve been reading the editorial section of The Free Press for the past couple of weeks to see how my fellow schoolmates feel. I see that there are mixed feelings, and various offers for solutions.
There were ten of us there holding hands.
It was a moment of intense introspection. I had been let down so many times before. There had been countless heartbreaks. Fumbles on the 1-yard line. Interceptions. Wild pitches. Untimely errors. Bill Buckner. And that damn Bambino.
After recently purchasing another house on School Street in Gorham, the University now controls most of that street. It’s the fifth house USM purchased in Gorham in the past 15 years.
During that same time, the University has purchased 24 houses around the Portland campus, causing several neighborhood groups to complain to the city about overcrowding and parking problems.
Joseph Westphal, a former official in the U.S. Department of Defense, will be the new chancellor for the University of Maine System, officials announced last week.
Westphal, who currently works as an attorney in the Washington D.C. area, was most recently the acting secretary of the U.

Criminal mischief was reported when a hole was discovered in the second floor wall of Portland Hall’s Yankee Clipper wing.

Christopher Bubar,19, was arrested near Robie Hall for criminal mischief after he jumped on the hood of a Gorham police car while officers were speaking to him.
University officials are trying to decide whether or not to expand coverage at the front desks of dorms following a series of dorm break-ins, including one in which a man was discovered in a women’s closet in Philippi Hall earlier in the month.
Currently on the Gorham campus there are security desk assistants working at the front desks of each residence hall every night between the hours of 7 p.
A sorority that was recently de-recognized for hazing its pledges is actively recruiting new members.
Such activities violate the intent of the University sanction, but the sorority isn’t technically doing anything wrong, according to Rodney Mondor, assistant director for Student Involvement and Greek Affairs.
When a restaurant has been around for about as long as I have, it must have something special to offer. Such is the case for The Great Lost Bear on Forest Avenue. This festive eatery and pub has been in its Portland location since 1979, according to management, and business is still going strong.
“The Brotherhood of the Wolf,” has something for almost everyone. Nearly every genre imaginable is crammed into this flick. It’s your typical martial arts, monster movie, murder mystery, period romance and political thriller.
The film’s identity crisis is not a bad sign however.
Busted Fro, the next generation of young emcees and rappers will flow into USM this week to demonstrate their innovative style of hip-hop during a hip-hop education workshop and dance party on Friday, Feb. 8.
During the workshop they will discuss the history of hip-hop and deliver their message of black pride and racial equality, according to Jessica Zambrano, Coordinator for Multicultural Student Affairs.

Guy Durichek plays these and other men in “You the Man,” a new one-man show about rape and domestic violence told from the male point of view.

Coach Ted Reese: Success through hard work

It is difficult to articulate the enthusiasm and charisma of Ted Reese, USM wrestling coach and senior college English professor.
Despite his artificial hip, artificial shoulder, three bones missing from his spine and his 65 years on this earth, it is hard to find a man more enthusiastic about his sport than Reese.

The Gorham and Portland events boards have teamed up to begin planning The Spring Fling to be held on April 19 from noon to midnight on the Gorham campus. “The Spring Fling is its tentative name,” said Jon Taylor, Portland Events Board chair.
