Editor’s Note: The following is a column submitted by an avid participator in pick- up basketball at USM, and would like it not go go forgotten in the wake of NCAA championships and NBA playoffs.
In the spotlight is organized basketball: flashy uniforms, stands full of screaming fans, colorful announcers, coaches pacing the sidelines, little boys mopping the parquet during time-outs.
Fans lined their lawn chairs along the orange netting around the gravel, stones, and concrete Friday afternoon to watch the Southern Maine Huskies baseball team in their blowout home opener.
The new 500-seat Towers Field stadium is in the process of construction, with only the playing surface and concrete dugouts completed, just enough for regular season play.
EXPLODING STAR
So, why do stars explode?
Well, to answer that question, it is prudent to first ask and answer the question:
What is the source of their light energy?
Once thought to have been divine light shining through an array of pinpricks on a dark shroud, the stars are now known to be mammoth gaseous spheres: all of them made self luminous by nuclear fusion reactions in their cores.
Professor passes on
A former USM faculty member, John Romanyshyn, died March 15. Romanyshyn was professor emeritus of social work. He joined USM faculty as a professor of social work in 1967, after teaching at UMO from 1946 to 1967. He was the first chair of USM’s undergraduate Social Work Department.
Aries (March 21-April 20) Before Thursday, past love affairs and old work assignments will demand completion. Expect forgotten emotions to soon cause new inspiration. Another opportunity for USM to be in the national spotlight has passed.
Student organizers of Spring Fling 2002 had hoped to close a deal with entertainment giant Clear Channel to bring MTV’s Campus Invasion to the Gorham campus on Monday, April 29.
The Free Press learned late Friday afternoon that all dates for MTV’s campus tour are booked and the popular program would not be added to the Spring Fling event schedule.
“Panic Room” is a suspenseful thriller with all the potential of slipping into banality, but keeps its footing because of the talented filmmaking behind it.
In the film, Meg Altman, played wonderfully by Jodie Foster, is a recently divorced woman who moves into a Manhattan townhouse with her teenage daughter Sarah (Kristen Stewart).

As a senior, I have about four weeks left to make some pretty big decisions in my life, one of which is buying a car. As a soon-to-be college graduate I need to get myself some wheels. I need a car to get a job, so car searching became my top priority as of two weeks ago.
Construction of the $11.2 million Bioscience addition to the Science Building on Falmouth Street in Portland began two weeks ago after almost two years of planning.
Completion is scheduled for April 2003.
Although the center will offer a great deal for the study and research of science, the construction is taking a big chunk of parking spaces from the existing faculty/staff lot that was nestled between the Science Building and Sullivan Gym.
Next fall USM students will be charged five cents per page when printing items from computer labs or libraries.
The new fee has already been budgeted, said Judy Ryan, executive assistant to the President.
“The plan is to begin to do that (charge for printing) in the fall semester,” Ryan said.
The 15-year-old Amer Kamal was stopped at an Israeli checkpoint after a night out with his friends. He was trying to get from the West Bank to his home in Jerusalem.
A guard asked him to present an identification card, something required of all Palestinians over the age of 16.
Question #1:
Student Activity Fee increase
On April 9 and 10 USM students on the Portland and Gorham campuses will be asked to vote on three referendum questions during the annual Student Senate elections.
In addition to questions about smoking on campus and the removal of the Student Communication Board, students will have to decide whether or not they support an increase in their student activity fee by approximately 50 percent.

I feel that at this time a compromise needs to be made between the students that use facilities (i.e., gym, skating rink, etc.), students that participate in activities that are sponsored by the fee money, and students that can’t or don’t participate or use facilities.

I hope the latest fee initiative by the university prompts students here at USM to become less passive and start giving a damn!

I am writing this to talk about the question concerning a possible increase in the Student Activities Fee for 2002-03. The USM students will be voting on a decision to pass this motion at the Student Senate elections on April 9 and 10.
I am in favor of this increase for many reasons.
Dear USM Community:
This past Friday the USM Student Senate voted to pass a referendum question on to the USM Student Body. The question asks whether the USM Student Communications Board (SCB) should be discharged as a student group. A student referendum and 2/3 vote of the USM Student Senate is one way to accomplish this.
Friday, March 8
Two male juveniles who were guests of a resident at Portland Hall were issued criminal trespass orders after the destruction of wall posters in the residence hall. The trespass orders prevent the two juveniles from returning to any residence hall on the USM campuses.
My taste buds were craving some spice last Tuesday, so I indulged in some Indian cuisine at Bombay Club on the corner of Congress and State Streets. This restaurant is a nice change from the bland, ordinary food I am accustomed to eating.
My first Indian dining experience was truly “a culinary journey to the exotic,” as it says on the menu.
In his latest film Josh Hartnett vows to give up sex for a torturous 40 days and 40 nights. This may sound like a harsh test for someone with his good looks, but for the rest of us it’s called existence.
But regardless of its exaggerated dilemma, “40 Days and 40 Nights” is an amusing romantic comedy that goes beyond its high-concept aspirations and become an enjoyable movie.
Lin Lisberger’s intermediate drawing class is almost done for the day. There are eight students sitting or standing around the edges of a small room with no windows save four small skylights. The room’s track lighting is mostly focused on the two women resting in the middle of the floor.
In its second year as a varsity sport after previously existing with club status for 10 years, the men’s lacrosse team has begun its 2002 season strong, with expectations of great improvement over last year’s record.
Led by captains senior defense Kevin Beauregard and senior midfield/attack Tobey Farrington, the team has its first game at Emerson College in Boston on March 18.
With the best depth and pitching staff in recent memory, the Southern Maine softball team has begun spring training. The team has not suffered any off-season injuries or surgeries, and has had successful recruiting, adding to the team’s overall depth.
Coach Bonny Brown-Denico describes the infield as “tall,” and the outfield as “fast,” which sounds very favorable for Southern Maine.
