Look for the Little Red Bus…
In January students who usually park on campus will have no choice but to seek alternatives due to the temporary shortage of spaces. The construction of the parking garage will take away 400 of the existing 584 spaces on the Bedford Street lot and the Marginal Way lot can hold up to 300 cars. Currently, it is estimated no more than 75 cars park at Marginal Way.
Bomb scare at LAC
Lewiston-Auburn College shut down last Wednesday after threatening phone calls were placed to the University. At 9 a.m., the first call made reference and said “you people support terrorists,” reported Bob Caswell, executive director, media & community relations.
WMPG Fall Begathon yields over $25,000
WMPG serves the USM and Greater Portland Community, Maine and the even the entire nation through the World Wide Web. As a community radio station, it thrives on listener support. The station depends on its on-air fundraiser for a quarter of its annual operating budget as well as portions coming from the student activity fee; underwriting and grants, said Tom Flynn, development director at WMPG.

University of Maine System Chancellor Joseph Westphal is percolating a plan that might combine Maine’s higher education systems into one board of trustees. If this were implemented, USM and Southern Maine Technical College (SMTC) would be governed under one board of trustees.

Volleyball “kills” UMass Boston
USM volleyball had a successful week, defeating UMass Boston in straight sets, last Wednesday in Gorham. In the victory Freshman Amanda Starkey had a team high 13 kills. Sophomore Mandy Dessert helped with her team leading 24 assists. It was their 7th victory of the season leading them into the weekend tournament in Farmington.
Women’s soccer has chance at playoffs despite rough start
Last Wednesday the USM women’s soccer team was punished by a superior Bowdoin team. The women of Bowdoin wore all-black uniforms and towered over the USM team. They easily overpowered our Huskies and took control of the ball and the game as if they rightfully owned the field.

Breaking sports news: Women’s tennis takes Little East Conference
The women’s tennis team after beginning the season with a 1-5 overall record has won the Little East Conference Women’s Tennis Championship. The team had three wins and no losses during the week previous to the Little East tournament and rode their momentum into the weekend.

The Portland Events Board is carrying on the tradition of bringing entertainment to campus. Joe Frechette, PEB chair announces the kickoff of “Weekly Wednesdays”, a program which brings live music and entertainment to the Portland Campus.

A perfect day for apple picking
A short 15-minute drive from Portland lies the Snell Family Farm. The Snell Farm has an abundance of trees, plants and a whole lot of nature. There are mums, lambs ears of corn, potatoes and pretty much anything else one could ever want from a farm. Director Kellsy MacKilligan begins rehearsal with quick warm up exercises for her actors. The actors are rehearsing for the Student Performing Artists (SPA) show, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” by Steve Martin. The actors gather round in a circle to start a multitude of tongue twisters and breathing exercises.

There’s no need to yell
I don’t consider myself easily offended. I am not one of those persons who looks for things to complain about. But I did find myself at a loss for words last Monday night at about 11 p.m. I went outside for my before-bedtime cigarette, and there was a group of boys from a fraternity in the parking lot outside Russell Hall on the Gorham campus. I couldn’t see them, but I could hear them.
