Okay, so my editors, Nicolette and Elise, tell me that it is my turn to write the weekly column in which a “staffer” speaks. For those of you who aren’t down with THE FREE PRESS jive, a staffer is someone who works here. Right. You knew that, it’s not hard to figure out.

Letters to the Editor: War talk
This week’s letters to the editor run the gamut of war and peace in fiery response to a letter last week in support of war.

Senate Update
Weekly report of the happenings at the Student Senate
Frat finds money in couch
The Interfraternity Council (IFC), the student-run governing body of USM, is short a few members due to the absence of those associated with the Gamma Omega chapter of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. This is because Gamma Omega owes about $3,700 to the Phi Kappa Sigma national office, based in Pennsylvania.
Renovations possible for Bailey Hall
Students on the Gorham campus all have to venture into Bailey Hall for class, business, or just to hang out. A few may even go into its library to study. Being the largest building in the University of Maine system, Bailey Hall is hard to avoid.
Muskie students event prompts discussion of money and politics
Last Monday the Muskie Student Organization (MSO) launched a four-part discussion panel series to a full house in Room 131 of the Law Building. The topic of this first panel was the effect of Maine’s Clean Elections Act on the nature of elections in Maine.
Crime on campus
A report of crime on campus culled from the USM police logs.

Unique caterpillar research sheds light on genetic process
Some USM students dream of leaving the state to pursue more specialized fields or just to excape the cold weather. A new research program headed by Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences David Champlin and funded by the National Science Foundation is keeping some of that restless talent in-state. The program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to get laboratory experience normally restricted to graduate students and professional researchers. The aim of the program is to study a phenomenon that takes place in cancer cells. The research is only being done at USM and could eventually bring royalty money to the University.
WMPG hosts worldwide Homelessness Marathon
“I’m kinda from everywhere.” Christopher Williams is 21 years old and today he lives in Portland. He just came from Boston, and a few weeks ago he was in Lewiston. But, everywhere he goes, he is homeless.
Disinterested discussions when truth has fled
As just about any visitor from Europe or Latin America or Asia these days will tell you, the adage that truth is the first victim of war is demonstrated every hour of every day in this country as Washington chafes at the bit to get on with it while a compliant media act like cheerleaders, and much of the public jumps to salute.
Staffer talks: Destiny of a rockstar?
I was 12 years old and on a flight bound for Pittsburgh when I had an epiphany. It dawned on me-while sitting in coach with Nirvana’s newly released “In Utero” blaring through my headphones-that I was destined to be a rock star.
A guaranteed parking spot with 24-hour surveillance
The Portland Events Board, Outing Club (PEB), and Ski Club came together recently to raffle off a “golden parking space.” This is a dedicated parking spot in front of the USM Police Department building on the Portland campus.

Beck keeps from slitting his wrists
In 1993 radio stations filled the airways with Beck’s eccentric and catchy tune, “Loser.” The cynical and self-loathing lyrics (“I’m a loser baby / So why don’t you kill me”) had us all singing along and making fun of our own idiosyncrasies. Along with “Loser,” songs like “Beercan,” “Pay No Mind,” and “Soul Sucking Jerk” created a strange but catchy and well-rounded album titled “Mellow Gold.”
And all those jazzy dance moves
Rob Marshall’s “Chicago” is a hot sexy blistering wow of a movie. This musical fuels itself with all that Broadway should be and blasts off directly into the moviegoer’s senses. It’s great songs, amazing choreography and sharp filmmaking attack the viewer from all angles and never lets up.
The Pepper Club and Tom “complete me”
This week Pinkie meets Mr. Cruise for a night on the town and maybe a little dancing to “Old Time Rock and Roll” (“Risky Business”)
A classic staged reading
It’s the first big show of the Theatre Department’s season and where have all the theatre majors gone? The American College Theater Festival has seduced them to travel to Keene State in New Hampshire to participate in a weekend of competition. The festival is a contributing factor in the Theatre Department’s decision to do a staged reading as opposed to a full production of Arthur Miller’s “A View from the Bridge.”
ASS to promote the arts
USMARTASS. Don’t be offended by the logo for the new name of the student group, the Art Student Society (ASS). Look closely and you’ll find multiple acronyms present, all relevant to the subject.
Spring Break in New England, anyone?
Technology in transportation options shrunk the crossing of oceans from an ordeal of many weeks to a six hour ride and a little jet lag. The drive to the airport can take longer than a flight across half a continent. The latest hot spots beckon us: Belize and Bali, Cancun and Costa Rica. Some of us traded in a cottage on the Cape for a timeshare in the Caribbean. The quality of a vacation experience nowadays appears to be directly proportional to the distance traveled.
Letters to the editor
This week’s letters to the editor respond to crime, Somalis, and anti-war sentiment
Letters from the Editor: I don’t want to live on the moon
Three days after my sixth birthday, the space shuttle Challenger exploded a minute after launch, killing all seven aboard including New Hampshire schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe. Millions watched the launch on television that day. A shuttle launch was a big deal back then. We knew all the astronauts; they were heroes. Most of my friends and I wanted to be Sally Ride when we grew up.
