One of the greatest institutions of modern music is the jam band. These performers get up on stage and improvise for full sets, fueled by the mood and by the audience.
Unfortunately, this is the reason that most studio recordings by jam bands don’t live up to the real thing.
In our first issue this year the Free Press wrote a story about the new logo, which included negative comments from an employee of the president’s office. Exercising her first amendments rights, this person, also a student, commented on her disapproval of the new logo.
An Internet worm called “sobig” and variants, called “lovesan” and “nachi” are making the rounds at USM, and the latest versions of Microsoft Windows are vulnerable , according to Carl Helms, Director of Software Services.
“Virus software can’t protect you,” Helms explained.

Hello again food lovers of the USM community! I hope your summers were filled with lobster roll binges and beer guzzling debauchery. I hope you all really showed the sun who’s boss. And although I am sad to see beach weather migrate for yet another Maine winter, I’m glad to be back for my inaugural review of the fall semester.
The names used here are real names of real people. The story is only slightly embellished as seemed useful to the writer. Global warming is real.
The dorm room was a double. Even before Dana plugged in her “Energy Star” lap top and high-tech, low-wattage reading light, the room was furnished with 500 watts of incandescent lights and a small fridge.

Why does a corner kick happen in soccer?
When the ball passes completely over the goal line on either side of the net so a goal is not scored, a corner kick is taken by a member of the attacking team. The ball can pass over this line either in the air or on the ground, and it must have been last touched by a member of the defending team.
At what point did I become a maggot?
The transformation first came to my attention after a series of obscure phone calls last January. I was working as copy editor of The Free Press. In the middle of the night, I received six frenetic voicemails asking, what does it feel like to be a maggot.
The third student senate meeting of the semester was peppered with laughter and joking. It was a brief meeting, just under one and a half hours. President Pattenaude, scheduled to speak, was unable to attend. “This meeting was quick, nice and friendly…but don’t get used to it,” said Chair Jeremy Collette after the meeting adjourned.
The Senate met last Thursday for just over two hours to discuss a wide field of issues including rape, building renovation, parking, events planning, and library systematization.
As the Senate began discussion over last week’s alleged date rapes, President Pattenaude had strong words:
“I find that a cowardly and sick act,” he said.

Is this entire year going to be nothing but Bush Bashing? Let’s look at a few things.
The Patriot Act. A nice law that keeps criminals and terrorists from carrying out acts that could harm the civilian population.

USM’s radio station, WMPG, promoted its 30th birthday party Wednesday morning with a live broadcast from the top of 86-foot Portland Observatory on Munjoy Hill.
Starting at about 9:15 a.m. Sara Cox and Nate Schrock of the band The Coming Grass gave a stark and spirited performance of four songs.
In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, President Bush proclaimed Sept. 11 Patriot’s Day in commemoration of those who died. He vowed they wouldn’t be forgotten and he asked Americans to “remember and honor those who perished.” He spoke these words just one week prior to the first anniversary of the tragedy.
The Husky Hall of Fame will soon induct new members during the Hall of Fame banquet which will take place during the Husky Homecoming Weekend (September 19-21) on the evening of September 20.
The seven former Huskies being enshrined are: Joleen Gardner Auger, Class of 1988, a former Player of the Year and USM’s all-time leading hitter in softball; Jim Broughton, Class of 1992, a two-time All-American an a member of USM’s first NCAA Division III national championship baseball team; Dave Flacco, Class of 1995, a two-time All-ECAC in hockey; Tiffany Dickinson Fregeau, Class of 1993, a two-time regional All-American forward in field hockey; Bill Hartley, Class of 1988, an All-Little East Conference in men’s basketball; Kyle Hutchins, Class of 1983; an All-New England player and a member of the men’s soccer team that reached the NAIA Final Four in 1979; and Lori Towle, Class of 1996, a two-time All-Little East Conference player in women’s basketball.
Fire departments from five cities responded to the dispatch of a chemical spill in Gorham campus’s Russell Hall this past Wednesday just before 11 a.m. Nobody was injured and and 30-35 people were safely evacuated from the building. The leak caused by a mechanical malfunction was safely cleaned up and disposed of.
