To the Editor:
USM Police “did not have the authority to do police work outside of Portland Hall.”
I find this amazing. If someone was murdered outside on public property ANYONE CAN MAKE A CITIZENS ARREST.
I feel USM police are tragically failing us.
Seth Therrien doesn’t know exactly how he got a broken nose, jaw and a concussion on the evening of Sept. 13. His first clear memory is of waking up a hospital bed in the Maine Medical Center the next morning. All anyone knows for sure is that Therrien was found bleeding in one of the bathrooms on the 7th floor of Dickey hall, at the end of a trail of blood that started with a large pool on the landing between the 7th and 8th floors.

Ani Difranco is no longer scheduled to play at the Field House in Gorham on Nov. 11, but the reason why is not clear.
Last Thursday the Gorham Events Board (GEB) announced to the senate that Difranco would no longer be playing at USM and would instead be playing at the Portland Exposition Building on the same night.

Ever since I befriended an Irish girl named Mara, I have wanted to see Ireland. “My family is from Galway,” she would tell me. “It is such a beautiful city. The countryside is amazing, the people are so nice, you have to go there.” Her praise of the country was backed by others’ accounts of Ireland’s beauty and charm.
The Student Senate’s first public forum of the year had a disappointing turnout, with one student attending, but the conversation was animated and the senators expressed enthusiasm over the discussion. Jennifer Trowbridge, a senior Economics major, spent an hour with most of the senate’s executive board talking about a range of topics, most of which concerned the senate’s continuing efforts to increase its visibility on campus and to get students involved in groups.

What does the term “header” mean, commonly used in soccer?
The term “header” is used when a player uses their head to either pass or shoot at the goal using only their head to guide the ball. The term is used to describe the particular type of shot that is taken.
In the months following September 11, comedian Bill Maher’s show “Politically Incorrect” was suddenly cancelled. Later, Aaron McGruder’s acclaimed comic strip, “The Boondocks”, where the protagonist badmouths conservatives, was quietly removed from many newspapers.
For those who came to give blood last Thursday, an abundance of donors meant waiting periods of up to forty five minutes. This was good news to Julie Hart, a Red Cross donor recruitment representative. The event was a success, exceeding its collection goal of 40 pints for the day.

What is a “handoff” in football?
A handoff is a term used to describe the exchange of the ball from the quarterback to the running back on a running play. When the ball is snapped to begin the play, the quarterback takes the ball from the center and then proceeds to “hand it off” to the running back.
The Senate met last Thursday for just over two hours to discuss a wide field of issues including rape, building renovation, parking, events planning, and library systematization.
As the Senate began discussion over last week’s alleged date rapes, President Pattenaude had strong words:
“I find that a cowardly and sick act,” he said.

Criminal Mischief: A dorm room in Gorham was entered and the door was damaged in the process, requiring a locksmith’s attention. The case is under investigation.
Sept. 21
Todd E. McArthur, 21, a Gorham resident, was arrested behind Dickey-Wood after arguing with USM police over a parking ticket and running from them.
UMaine admission hits all-time high
The seven schools of the Umaine system have a record 34,752 students enrolled this fall, an increase of 663 students, or 1.9 percent, over last year’s enrollment. This is the second year in a row that enrollment has increased by a record-setting margin.

Answer: I feel cameras at school would be an expensive solution to a relatively small problem. Besides, anyone serious about committing a crime would probably break or dismantle the camera anyway.

USM honored in Princeton Review guidebook
USM has been named one of the Princeton Review’s “135 Great Schools to Consider” in the first issue of that publication. The survey of the northeast includes 547 schools in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there is a modest, increased risk of bacterial meningitis on college campuses. It strikes about 3000 Americans each year causing more than 300 deaths annually. It is estimated that 100 to 125 cases of meningococcal meningitis occur annually on college campuses and 5 to 15 students die as a result.
