DIVERSITY POLICY IN QUESTION
To the Editor:
Before enrolling at USM students may be pleased to find that there is a discrimination policy in their contract and on most pieces of literature published by the university. This policy was issued by The President’s Office and the Office of Campus Diversity and Equity in 2002 and can be found at http://www.

USM hosts NCAA regional meet
The USM men’s and women’s cross county teams hosted the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships, Sat. Nov. 15 in Cumberland. It was not an ideal day to wear shorts and tank-tops but the blustery conditions did little to deter the close to five hundred runners from more than 70 schools across New England that traveled to Twins Brooks Recreation Center to compete for the New England Division III crown.
Meet Joe Student
What brought you to the area- what do you think of it?
I knew that I wanted to stay in the Portland area because of my community involvement here.
Why did you choose USM?
I wanted a school where I could go part-time, be involved with the school, and still continue with my involvement in the community.
moe. plays four-hour show in Portland
What do you get when you cross blistering, improvisatory rock/reggae/funk with enough marijuana to choke a Rasta? That’s right, you get moe. at the State Theater! With rock overtones and ripping, unforgiving solos, the band’s Nov. 8 show captivated the audience for nearly four hours, only to leave them pleading for more.
Happy Thanksgiving from the staff of The Free Press!
Letter from the Editor
Throughout the years, I’ve let go of a lot of things: teddy bears, blankets, clothes, cars, friends and boyfriends. Some I did with resoluteness and strength; others I let go of accidentally, almost as if I weren’t paying attention, and they wandered away.

Movie set is an opportunity for learning
USM student Sean Demers first fell in love with acting in the sixth grade and has since decided that it is all he wants to do. So, when the cast and crew for the HBO movie “Empire Falls” arrived in the small northern town of Skowhegan, Maine, Demers planned to attend what he dubs the “cattle call” – a massive audition for movie extras.
FOOTPRINT
How do you know when you’ve given someone a good present? Usually, good presents are distinguished by having a lot of thought put into them. They say to the recipient, “I know you.” It is easy to tell when you give this kind of present. The three best presents I have ever given share another unique feature: although they differed in almost every way, they were all gifts of time, rather than gifts of stuff.
Wireless internet at USM due by fall semester
Saridel Hel says he attracts a lot of attention with his “spectrum analysis rig,” a grey pushcart with a wooden board bolted vertically to its side. The board holds a white bubble the size of a softball about eight feet in the air. Hel, a senior economics major, uses an iBook and maps of campus’s buildings, along with the cart, to do what he calls a “spectrum inventory” of the campus, shop-talk for the research he is doing to prepare for the introduction of wireless networking at USM.
