Letter from the Editor
Winter Session is an endangered species in the state of Maine. And it’s a species we should try and protect.
Two weeks ago President Pattenaude presented to the Faculty Senate his newest five year plan, titled “Transforming USM,” where he detailed his goals for a changing student population.
Winter Session’s future on thin ice
USM plans to look at whether eliminating Winter Session would have potential savings for the institution. Doing away with the program was one of hundreds of suggestions gathered in a series of hearings held by the University Review and Improvement Committee last semester.
“Set List” lacks luck of the Irish
“Set List” lacks luck of the Irish

I’ll be the first to admit that this album is the first I’ve ever heard of the Frames, an Irish band that is so fervently loved in its homeland that it knocked Justin Timberlake and U2 off the top of the pop charts last summer.
Women’s Basketball appears unstoppable
The University of Southern Maine Women’s basketball team is approaching the final month of play in February and has only six games left in the regular season. With its fourteenth straight win and an impressive Little East record of 8-0, the team is ranked second in the nation.

USM FOOTPRINT
After tiring of walking the length of the long parking lot in the bitterly cold Maine winter, I decided to blaze a trail in the virgin snow, creating a shortcut to Bailey Hall, in which my class was held. Lifting my feet above the surface of the shin deep snow and then setting them down, I made a line of footprints from the edge of the lot to the adjacent, shoveled walkway.
Kucinich proposes tuition-free universities
A somber but hopeful speech:
Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich called for tuition-free public universities, explained his proposed federal Department of Peace, and preached the importance of love to a packed house of supporters and onlookers in a hastily arranged campaign visit to Portland’s St.
New police cruisers not friends of the earth
The University Police Department recently made a request to purchase two new Ford Crown Victoria Police Cruisers. According to Craig Hutchinson, vice president of Student Life, the Ford Explorer in Gorham and the Ford Crown Victoria in Portland are both beginning to have maintenance problems and need to be replaced.
“Man Out Of Time” dares and succeeds
If you’re thinking about looking for a job in the corporate world after graduation, you just might think twice after reading Michael Hogan’s first novel “Man Out Of Time.” Through the eyes of the book’s narrator, Hogan paints a frank and utterly convincing picture of a company culture where getting ahead has little to do with talent, intelligence, or even hard work, and everything to do with social connections and a sharp grasp of office politics.

Staffer Speaks
Dear car,
Do you remember the day we first met? It was a dry August day in Portland, Oregon. You were humbly parked next to a green Dodge Dart with a 350, a four-barrel and a blower. I remember how you shone in the sun, and though you were only a cheap four-cylinder Toyota, I fell in love and took you home.
USM building nation’s largest cell library
The walls inside the Wise Laboratory of Environmental and Genetic Toxicology are crowded with incubators with labels like “Sea lion kidney” and “Human liver.” On one wall is a large tank of liquid nitrogen, accompanied by a graduate student peering into a microscope.
Down with SCHLOCK & AWFUL
The grocery list of America’s problems compiled by the Democrats includes issues you would expect a true politician to hit upon such as the economy, which made me all the more sickened by the State of the Union Address wherein Bush made “steroids in sports” and “preserving the sanctity of marriage” out to be the most pressing issues facing us today.
Briefly…

An Asian Excursion
I had been traveling for a few months when I decided to head to Sumatra, Indonesia. Indonesia was cheap, challenging and less touristy. When I arrived at the first bus station, I met five other backpackers who I ended up traveling with for a month. One of them was a Norwegian named Caroline who I really hit it off with.

Letters to the Editor
Give up on Dan? Never
To the Editor
You’d think I’d just give up on Dan and his warped sense of reality. But once again, his blinded view of our President makes me step up to the plate and dish it back.
The State of the Union Address. Who can you trust? Howard Dean? The man is a racist who couldn’t stand up to Al Sharpton’s questioning about blacks serving public office while Dean ran Vermont.
Election mumbo jumbo demystified
Like the evolution of the word caucus, the processes for choosing a presidential candidate have also evolved. Caucus originated from the Algonquin word caucuso, translated to mean counsel, elder or the gathering of tribal chiefs. Caucus results across the nation are being tallied indicating the gun smoke is clearing on the presidential nomination race.
Corrections
Last issue p 1- The classified senate was omitted from the list of contributors to the president’s action plan called “Transforming USM.”
Last issue p 12- Ed Szalajeski was credited for the “Bacchae” photo. The perfectly peachy picture, was taken by Chris Jovanelli.
Question of the Week
Name: Jonathan Read
Year: Junior
Major: Accounting
Answer: Dean’s a wacko. He would never have a chance in the national election. Kerry had a chance in the national election, but he’s farther left than Ted Kennedy, which scares me. Edwards or Lieberman have the best chance of winning.
