Though the statewide University budget cuts were only finalized last week the expected decrease in revenue has affected the UMaine system since November when Baldacci proposed the initial $13 million cut. The stringent emergency hiring freeze introduced in November was the reaction to the inevitably plummeting budget.

It’s been a quiet, uneventful week. Very quiet, if you discount the brick that sailed through my window shortly after the conclusion of the Super Bowl. The assailant left few clues, but I imagine it was a scorned ex-lover or her male counterpart – the scorned ex-bookie.
Regardless of recent budget cuts, the University is continuing to take steps towards expanding the campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston-Auburn. President Pattenaude has met with a number of groups including the Professional, Faculty and Student Senates to discuss USM’s Action Plan for 2004 – 2007.
With a few weeks to go in the season, the USM men’s hockey team is fighting to improve its record and looking forward to the playoffs. The team defeated the Connecticut College Camels 9-7 in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) game on Jan. 31. The win was the third straight for the Huskies.

In May of 2002, I ventured to a place that I would bet few know the location of: Mongolia. I had just finished backpacking through the toughest part of my trip, at the time, in China. Noticing that I was so close to an untouched country, I decided to see a country that few people had experienced.
After a rash of car burglaries in Gorham last December and January, USM Police found a suspect. They are working with the Gorham Police in an investigation that is still ongoing. The last few weeks have seen a fresh outbreak of car-related crime – this time simple vandalism, with no theft involved.
If you have not heard of Trey Gadbois, you should attend a USM men’s indoor track meet.
Gadbois, a freshman on the indoor track team and a graduate of Portland High School, is a rare talent.
In Gadbois’ first meet as a member of the USM Indoor Track squad he asserted himself by setting three school records.
We are told to vote with our hearts. Our inner feelings are ideally there to guide us to cast our votes for the candidates whom we feel will best serve our country. In a perfect world this would be the best way to vote. In our cynical world today, however, I feel it na?ve to vote solely based upon feelings.
The Student Senate is looking for a new place to call home on campus. Senators have expressed frustration with the location of the current Senate house at 11 Baxter, across Forest Avenue from the Portland campus. The president’s plan to expand on the Portland campus may provide the Senate the opportunity to move it’s been looking for.

Thanks so much for your coverage of Kucinich. You covered his issues well in the space you had.
As a supporter, and mother of two USM students, I was very disheartened to see that the best your professors could offer for input was that he didn’t have a chance to win the nomination.
February is Black History month and USM will be commemorating it with a month-long salvo of events, some of which have already taken place. Last week, Bob Brown gave a lecture titled “The Slavery Reparations in the U.S. and Africa” and a separate “Living History” panel discussion explored the effects of the Civil Rights march on Washington.
Nearly one in four Americans has high blood pressure. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and described as two numbers – the systolic (top) and diastolic (bottom) readings. These readings are often recorded as a fraction, with systolic over diastolic, for example: 110/68.
My roommate and I finally turned off the TV at three a.m. I couldn’t fall asleep – I lay there listening to the sounds of the night. Cars, people and doors all seemed to conspire to keep me up. Still tossing and turning about an hour later, I decided that not being able to sleep after being up for 20 hours was a problem to be solved.
Centro-Matic are a Texas band who play a combination of indie rock and power-pop, topped off with lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Will Johnson’s gritty, drawling vocals. Henry Rollins carved out a place in American pop culture literally out of brute force. In his seminal role fronting the hard-touring and influential punk band Black Flag, he replaced two other singers and hung on, not because he was the best singer (he freely admits that he isn’t the best singer the band had), but because he was able to withstand the abusive and violent crowds of the early punk era.
Final budget cuts lowered
Final budget cut totals to the University of Maine System are $850,000 less than the governor originally proposed. The state budget, adopted January 30th, calls for a $4.95 million cut for UMS this year, down from $5.8 million. The state appropriation cut for next year remains $1.

Political correctness was at its zenith at USM in 1992, the year that Bill Clinton and Ross Perot challenged president George H.W. Bush for the White House. Students seemed to overwhelmingly favor the Democratic side, but conservative students kept the faith, diligently writing letters to the editor expressing their views.
Kabir is a London-born, Boston-bred, self-proclaimed rapper and producer of “Hip hop music, real and raw, cause everything they say I heard it before.” His new album “Fuel for the Fire” is something you most likely haven’t heard before, and surprisingly enough, it’s pretty good.

The 2003 – 2004 season has been a roller coaster ride for the University of Southern Maine women’s hockey team. The Lady Huskies are currently 7-7-1 and have shown flashes of athletic greatness. However, inconsistent play has hampered the development of the team.
