USM has more support than you might think
Many of the stories reported by THE FREE PRESS are critical of the University administration, its decisions and policies. As a reporter for the paper, I’ve talked to a lot of students and come away with one underlying impression: many students don’t think University officials are looking out for them or have their best interests in mind.
Upgrades needed to support wireless service
Before wireless installation is complete on both campuses, the University will have to upgrade some of its older equipment. Though some buildings are already equipped with the necessary technology to support wireless connections, older buildings require some revamping before access points can be installed.

Strip poker is embarrassing without the vodka
At the beginning of the year I embarked upon a game of strip poker and last week I lost. Now, I stand here naked before you.
Local music store drives voter registration
It may not surprise anyone that young people are still not going to the polls to vote. The percentage of voters in the 18 to 24 year-old age category has been steadily declining since the 1970s. Chris Brown of Bull Moose Music wants to do something about poor voter turnout among young people.
The wild, wild East
“Poor Sharon. We were in the middle of nowhere and she had just fallen off her horse and couldn’t move. We put up a tarp to shelter her from the sun and exchanged ideas. The sun was hot, all of us were emotionally strung out – especially Sharon’s husban, Noam – and a sense of helplessness was taking over.”

“The Way Air Should Be”
Five USM students recently attended a conference at Harvard not knowing where they would sleep. The four girls and guy found an offer of floor space in a dorm room though, and everyone left with a smile. The conference was organized by Harvard’s Environmental Action Committee and The Climate Campaign, a coalition of Northeast schools from nine states working to reduce human activities that contribute to global climate change.
Using sustainability as a tool for responsible decision making
Stevenson Munro, USM nursing major from Portland, is frustrated about the lack of public transportation in the city. “Portland is … just the right size, everything is mostly within walking distance. But the public transportation is so bad that you need to have a car.”

CD is full of Air
While you may not recognize the names Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel, you may have heard their music before. The duo that makes up the French band Air provided music for the soundtracks of Sophia Coppola’s movies “The Virgin Suicides” and “Lost in Translation.

“Hellboy” is a hellride
I picked up a comic book from the stack of magazines at the mechanic’s the other day: “The Hulk.” It was an enjoyable, though unbelievable, story with all the characteristics of a great comic book: good battling evil, a superhero with known superpowers, an easy to follow storyline and a happy ending. The creators of the movie “Hellboy” could have learned a lot from my short wait at the mechanic’s.

But Doesn’t Everybody Gamble?
Compulsive gambling is a chronic and progressive disease, much like alcoholism or drug addiction. It’s hard to detect and difficult to treat because you can’t take away the “drug of choice” – money. People whose gambling always has predetermined and acceptable limits are at low risk of becoming compulsive gamblers.
