Relaxing the Grip of Foreign Oil
Polling has got to be a growth industry in an election year. American’s seem to delight in being told by pollsters what their neighbors have just told the pollsters. For many years, most American’s polled have told pollsters they consider themselves to be concerned about the quality of the environment.
Dignity in Politics?
At the beginning of the semester, when we here at The Free Press were still registering something resembling normal blood pressure levels and enjoying actual REM sleep, we were going to produce a combined Halloween/Election Day issue. Because this election is scary.
In Brief…
Governer marks passage of ranking aide
Governor John E. Baldacci directed the United States flag and the State of Maine flag be lowered to half staff from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, October 28, 2004, in the City of Portland in memory of and respect for Gene E.
Rezoning issue quiet but vital
At 10 a.m., the intersection of Old County Road and Saco road is quiet. The parking lot at Hansen’s Farm Market is empty. To look at it, it doesn’t appear to be the center of a heated town debate, but it is. On the November 2 ballot there is a rezoning proposal for 72 acres of land around the intersection that some feel will determine the future of Gorham.

Passion at the Merrill
No performance of any opera has been improved by the presence of a leaf blower on stage. The Stanislavsky Opera Company’s performance of La Traviata at the Merrill Auditorium on October 26 was no exception. Apparently stage designer Vladimir Arefiev found the temptation irresistible.
Demosthenes Corner
USM hosts a variety of illustrious speakers each week. Here is a sample of some of them.

USM gears up for election
Last week, among the stack of Glickman Library one student
picked up a copy of the New York Times, the paper of record. “I
couldn’t buy the Times today,” he said “Not with Bush on the cover.”
Two days before, the Times had endorsed Senator John Kerry.
Welcome to the 2004 election cycle.

Letters to the Editor
“Crime and punishment” goes too far…. Environmentally conscious voting…. Petty profanity…. Fair and balanced on Gorham campus…. Let’s hunt humans!….

Ballet in Portland
Looking for something to do this Friday night that doesn’t include jeans, keg stands, or your boyfriend’s crappy interpretation of romance in the form of Pay Per View and take-out? How about a night at the ballet?
